Elsie Jean was the daughter of Clarence and Cynthia (Van Marel)Cleveringa. She attended the Carmel Country School and graduated from the Sioux Center High School. She then attended the Nettleton Business School, after which she was employed at the Hull Bakery and the Rock Valley Elevator.
On June 26, 1959, in Carmel, she married Larry Lee Bloemendaal from Orange City. She first worked at the Vogel Paint Store in Orange City, but then remained home to raise her seven daughters. Later, she was employed at the Southtown Bakery in Orange City and Wal-Mart in Sioux Center. Elsie and Larry were also custodians at the Orange City Medical Clinic.
She was a very active member of the Newkirk Reformed Church.
Survivors include her husband. Larry; six daughters and eleven grandchildren, Brenda and her husband, Darrell Blackmore, and their children, Alicia and Corey, of Le Mars: Sandra and her husband, Arlan Britt, and their children, Andrew, Angela, Stacia, Steven, and Christopher, of Le Mars: Wanda and her husband, Steven Gerzel and their children, Sabrina and Brandon, of Gurnee, Illinois; Paula Bloemendaal of Portland, Oregon; Donna and her husband, Keith Westhoff, and their children, Brittany and Brady, of Struble; and Tamara Bloemendaal of Cedar Rapids; her mother, Cynthia Cleveringa of Sioux Center; two sisters and their husbands, Carolyn and Rich Odens of Harrisburg, South Dakota; and Colleen and Dave Bomgaars of Sioux Center; a brother and his wife, Calvin and Lois Cleveringa of Sioux Center; her mother-in-law, Matilda Ter Horst of Orange City; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Connie and Alden Menning and Barb and El Top, all of Orange City; and Ardis and Brad Van Rooyen, of Alden; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lisa Gail.
