Owing to the lack of time last week we were unable to give a complete notice of the sudden death of Mrs. Jos. Jonas who died on Friday [Feb. 9] as a result of giving birth to a child on Thursday. Mrs. Jonas, whose maiden name was Gertrude Thelen, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Peter Thelen and was born in Germany December 20, 1863, being 36 years old at the time of her death. She came to this country with her parents in 1868 and settled near Council Bluffs, where she was married to Joseph Jonas on January 11, 1883. With her husband she came to Sioux County the year following and settled four miles southwest of Alton. Here they have lived ever since and reared a family of eight children--Peter, Matt, Jennie, Katie, Nic, Mary, John and Alovisius. Mrs. Jonas was a member of St. Mary's church in Alton and leaves a wide circle of friends to mourn her loss with the husband and children.
One sister, Mrs. John Schneider, who resides in the neighborhood of the Jonas home, and her uncle, John Thelen of this city are her only other relatives. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday from the Catholic church and the body was laid to rest in the Alton cemetery. Those in attendance at the funeral from out of town were the following people from Granville: John, Henry and Herman Schwartz, Geo. Schmit, Mrs. Nic Eckhart, Mrs. Trapp and Herman Trapp.
