From the Alton Democrat of Aug 6, 1892
Rock Valley Register.
The Rock River has again claimed two Victims. On Friday afternoon of last week, at about three o'clock, two young men, both Hollanders, name G. Krule and R. Kooi or Kool, went down to the dam to bathe. They were not fmiliar with the depth nor condition of the river, which at this point is quite deep and the shore abrupt and steep. They waded in and were soon beyond their depth, and neither being unable to swim, they went down within about twenty feet from the shore. There was no one near enough to render assistance to the unfortunate young men. Reynold Klay and G. Klay who were fishing near the scene of the accident gave the alarm and soon a score of men were in the there searching for the bodies, which were both recovered in a short time. Every effort was made to resuscitatie the drowned men but without success. The young men were new comers here, having arrived from the Netherlands only this spring. Krule had no relatives here, and Kool has a brother living in this neighborhood. They were both in the employ of the Klay brothers, and were sturdy and well formed men, not yet 21 years of age, of good habits and were well like by those that knew them, and their sad and untimely death causes a feeling of profound sorrow here. The funeral took place on Saturday after noon, services being held at the Dutch Reformed church.
(No information could be found on further identity of these two young men. Could find no Krule names in Holland but were plenty of Krols in Friesland, if anyone has information please contact our page coordinator)
