Lubbers, Alfred "Ted," 1904-2004

Alfred "Ted" Lubbers, 99, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, June 16, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center with the Rev. Van Rathbun officiating. Interment was in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Lubbers was born August 13, 1904, to the Rev. Fredrick and Minnie (Van Laar) Lubbers in Albany, New York. In 1911 the family moved to Sioux Center where his father took up his fourth charge as pastor of First Reformed Church. He went to barber college in Sioux City. He later worked in Holstein and in Canton, South Dakota, where he met his wife, Hilda Cleveland. They were married February 15, 1927, in Sioux Center by his father. He opened Lubbers Barber Shop in Sioux Center where he barbered for 47 years, retiring in 1963.

He was an active member of Central Reformed Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He sang with the "Senior Saints" well into his 90s. The couple enjoyed their summers in northern Minnesota at their cabin on Jesse Lake. He loved fishing. Many friends and relatives came to stay, to enjoy the fishing, evenings of fish stories and listening to the loons.

He is survived by the love of his life for 77 years, Hilda Lubbers of Sioux Center; a daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Dennis Foxhoven of Ida Grove; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Connie Lubbers of Sioux City; two daughters-in-law, Marge Lubbers of Big Fork, Minnesota, and Ann Larkin of Hope, Idaho; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Alroy Lubbers; and three brothers, Raymond, Clarence and Robert Lubbers.
