Roy Mapes, 76, of Hawarden, died Saturday, January 10, 1987, in a hospital in Hawarden after a long illness.
Services were at 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, January 13, in the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden. Rev. Jalmer Eldal officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery under direction of Dow Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Virgil Peterson, Lloyd Youngkin, Ellwood Youngkin, Robert Hendricks, William Lang and Donald Schlueter.
Mr. Mapes was born April 20, 1910, in Aitkin County, MN. He married Elna Johnson April 11, 1937, at Hutchinson, MN. They moved to Hawarden in 1948 where he was employed for several years by International Harvester Co. He purchased the nursing home in Hawarden in 1957 and operated it as Mapes Nursing Home until 1974. He then had a new nursing home constructed and operated it until 1979.
Mr. Mapes was a member of the American Lutheran Church and Eagles Lodge of Hawarden.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael of Hawarden; four daughters, Cheryl Lewison, and Mrs. Rocky (Alice) Waterman, both of Hawarden, Julayne Callaghan of Kirkland, WA., and Mrs. Kent (Mary) Jesperson of Jacksonville, FL; a brother, George of Independence, MO; a sister, Mrs. John (Ilo) Lycan of Nampa, ID; 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
