Frans Vander Stoep, 85, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vander Stoep, pioneer settlers of Sioux county passed away at the home of his children, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Oelrich, Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 p.m. following an illness of five days.
Mr. Vander Stoep was born in the Netherlands on June 5, 1853. He came to America with his parents at the age of 3 years. The journey was made by sail boat and they landed at New Orleans on May 1, 1856. From there they proceeded by boat up the Mississippi river as far as St. Louis and then on to Keokuk, Ia., then by wagon and ox-team on to Pella where the family resided until 1871, when they migrated to Sioux county. They homesteaded on what is known as the old Vander Stoep place two miles west of Orange City.
He was married to Maria Adriana Van Pelt on March 28, 1876 by the Rev. A. Betten. The young couple homesteaded on the farm two and one half miles west of Orange City. This farm was owned by him until the day of his death. The life of the young couple on the farm was typical of that of all the early settlers and they endured many hardships.
In 1907 Mr. Vander Stoep purchased the old Lohr residence in Orange City and the family moved to town. They resided there until the death of Mrs. Vander Stoep on June 22, 1930. Since then he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. G. A. Oelrich.

Vos, Corona, South Dak.; Floris; Dena, Mrs. John Plender; Richard of Mallard, Ia.; Kathryn, Mrs. G. Vedder, Estherville, Ia. One son Andrew has not been heard of for some time.
