Mr. Dick Vander Vegte, age 78, of Peoria, Arizona, formerly of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Hospice of Arizona in Peoria.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, March 16, at 2:00pm, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family present will be the hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Dick was born on March 1, 1932, at Hull, Iowa, the son of Dick and Grace (Schottert) Vander Vegte. He was raised at Hull until 1937, when his family moved to Orange City.

On June 19, 1958, he married Nelvia Jean Vander Meulen in Orange City. They lived in Orange City for one year and then lived in Le Mars, Iowa, until moving to Arizona in 1966. They made their home in the Phoenix area and since 1992 have been residents of the Westbrook Retirement Community in Peoria.

For most of his career, Dick was a distributor of orthopedic products for Biomet. This included calling on doctors and hospitals throughout Arizona and surrounding areas.

Dick and Nelvia were currently members of the West Valley Christian Fellowship in Sun City, Arizona. Earlier, they belonged to the Phoenix Christian Reformed Church and the Orangewood Christian Reformed Church in Glendale, Arizona. During the summers, they would usually spend a few months in Orange City, where they attended the Calvary and First Christian Reformed Churches.

He enjoyed golfing with many friends in Arizona and traveling with his wife and their pets in their motor home. He adored their pug dogs.

Survivors include his wife of more than 51 years; two sisters, Anthonette, and her husband, Dick Van Gelder, of Creston, Iowa; and Johanna (Elmer-deceased) Reinders, of Slayton, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Peggy Vander Meulen, of Orange City; and many loving nephews and nieces and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and their wives, Herman (Johanna), Ed (Elvina), Henry (Adaline), and Gerrit (Doretta) Vander Vegte; three sisters and their husbands, Henrietta (John) Reekers, Minnie (Dick) Langstraat, and Gertrude Vander Vegte; and a brother-in-law, Myron Vander Meulen.
