Johannsen Rites Held Wednesday

Funeral services for William H. Johannsen, 68, who died Sunday at the Hawarden hospital after a short-illness although he had been subject to a heart condition for some time were held at 2:30 Wednesday at the American Lutheran church, Rev. Norval Wigtil officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by Alcester V. F. W. Post No. 6149, was at Grace Hill cemetery. The Barnard Funeral home was in charge of interment.

Music was by Mrs. F. E. Hanson as soloist with Jolene Lingscheit at the organ. Casket bearers were Oliver Edson, LaVerne Headers, Arnold Bern, Wilbur Bos, Arnold Twedt and LeRoy Mackey.

Mr. Johannsen was born November 24, 1896 in Union county, South Dakota, near Alcester, a son of Peter and Christine Wilkens Johannsen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

A veteran of World War I he entered the service in June, 1917 and was discharged March 29, 1919, having served overseas in France.

On March 29, 1922 he married Josephine Berry at Morris, Minn. They farmed all their married life in Union county until retiring to Hawarden in the spring of 1962.

Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Lowell Johnson and Mrs. Derald Keiser, both of Alcester; two brothers, Chris of Phoenix and Fred of Hawarden; a sister, Mrs. Anna Ludwig of Hawarden, and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
