Ireton, Iowa Obituary: Ireton, Iowa- Mildred JoAnn Van Oort, 85, of Ireton, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Ireton with Rev. Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with the family present from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton.
Mildred JoAnn Van Oort was born December 12, 1924 in Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit Neal and Esther Johanna (Beernink) Schoep. She graduated from the Sioux Center High School. Millie worked at the telephone office and grocery store prior to moving to Sioux City, where she worked at Armors until Howard returned from WWII.
Millie married the love of her life, Howard G. Van Oort on June 20, 1946 in Hospers, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children, Sharon, David, and Dennis. They moved to Sioux Center and then to Ireton in 1953, when Howard purchased the Ireton Produce.
Howard and Millie enjoyed spending 18 winters in Mesa, Arizona. They also enjoyed going to their grandchildren’s sports and music activities. Millie was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Ireton and was active in guild, choir, and other church activities. Millie was also a member of the Senior Citizens and the Red Hatter Club in Ireton. She was an excellent cook and loved to share her baked items with others. Howard died on March 14, 2009.
Millie is survived by her daughter, Sherri and her husband Gary Hietbrink of Worthington, Minnesota, and their three children, Michelle and husband Torey Schroeder and children, Morgan and Brooklyn; Jason, and Jessica and husband Matthew Mydland; her son, David and his wife Lavonne (De Jong) of New Hampton, Iowa and their two children, Jaclyn and Cristopher; and her son, Dennis and his wife Kristin (Ter Horst) of Ireton, and their two children, Nicholas and wife Holly and children, Karsen and Kolten; and Jenna; and her sister, Phyllis Heiliger and her husband Lee of Sheldon, Iowa.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; and brother, Harold Schoep.
