Rock Valley, IA: Herman Zomer, 76, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Hegg Memorial Hospital. Funeral Service will be 2 p.m., Tuesday at Netherlands Reformed Congregation at Sioux Center, IA. Rev. H. Hofman will officiate. Burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Sioux Center. Visitation will be Monday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
Herman Zomer Jr was born April 25, 1933 at Armour, SD, son of Herman Sr. and Helena (Spaans) Zomer. He grew up in the Armour/Corsica, SD areas. Herm was in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and served in Korea. Herm was united in marriage to Jeane Schelling on June 23, 1955 at Sioux Center, IA. Together they farmed various locations then spent 9 years at Grand Rapids, MI where Herm worked at Knapp and Vogt Manufacturing, then returned to farming in 1969 in NW Iowa. Herm worked at Farmers Elevator at Rock Valley from 1984 until diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) in 2000. Herm was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Sioux Center where he served as a deacon for 14 years.
Herm is survived by his wife, Jeane; 1 son, Randy (Jean) Zomer of Inwood, IA; 3 daughters: Helen (Jerry) Larsen of Maurice, IA, Hilda (Gene) Hoogendoorn of Hawarden, IA, Judy (Todd) Koedam of Canton, SD; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Clarence (Marlene) Zomer of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 sisters: Hermina Rozeboom of Rock Valley, IA, Nellie Rozeboom of Inwood, IA, Betty Rozeboom of Rock Valley, IA; 2 brothers-in-law: Gilbert (Wilma) Schelling of Orange City, IA, John R. (LaVonne) Schelling of Sioux Center, IA; sisters-in-law: Joane Zomer, Henrietta Knibbe, Emma (Gerrit) Roskam all of Sioux Center, IA.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Michelle Larsen; brother, Cornie Zomer.
