Alyda Helen Wassenaar was born on December 11, 1930, in Ritter, Iowa. She was the daughter of Dick and Ethel (Wiersema) Kraayenbrink. She lived her youth in Middleburg, Iowa, and attended school in Newkirk, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Donald Wayne Wassenaar of Orange City, Iowa, on January 24, 1950, in Orange City. They lived in Orange City until 1960, when they moved to Sheldon, Iowa. They were blessed with 6 children and enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. Donald passed away on April 12, 2006.
Alyda was a breath of fresh air around Sheldon. She seemed to know everyone and worked in many different positions in retail businesses in the area. She was a foster grandmother and a ‘mom’ to many. Alyda enjoyed sewing, bowling, traveling, and being busy with her family, friends and her church. She loved spending time at the Lakes, going out to eat, and attending many events including the Symphony and Summer Theater. She passed on many traditions, one being decorating Christmas cookies with her children and grandchildren. She was the ‘glue’ that held her family together. Alyda was a member of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon where she was very active.
She passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Alan and Nancy Wassenaar of Doon, IA, Diane and Dick Burns of Archer, IA, Daryl and Marcia Wassenaar of Sheldon, IA, Barb and Glen Vanden Hull of Archer, IA, Sheila and Mike Weier of Linn Grove, IA; daughter-in-law: Becky Wassenaar of Yates City, KS; foster son: Harry Probert of Nevada, IA; 19 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother: Henrich and Marilyn Kraayenbrink of Sioux Center, IA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Wilhelmina Kraayenbrink of Hull, IA, Alfred Wassenaar of Sheldon, IA, James and Mildred Wassenaar of Orange City, IA, Stan and Kathy Wassenaar of Yucca Valley, CA; and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald; her son: Veryl Wassenaar; one brother: Asa Kraayenbrink; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bill and Wilhelmina Gesink, Joubert and Nellie Wassenaar, Ralph and Net Wassenaar
