Winnie Poppema, the daughter of Jim and Katie Zwier Smit, was born October 18, 1913 in Hospers, IA. She received her education in a country school and later at Hospers Christian School. On January 22, 1936 she was united in marriage to Fred Poppema at her parent's home at Hospers. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Sheldon area before moving to a farm near Seney. They farmed there for a few years before returning to the Sheldon area to farm. Her husband preceded her in death on January 22, 1959. She remained on the farm until moving into Sheldon in 1961. Winnie worked for a short time in the lunch room of the Sheldon School before working for the Sheldon Drape and Blind for over twentyfive years.
She was a member of the First Chr Ref Church and was active in the women's groups and in the music of the church. She enjoyed playing scrabble, baking, cooking, spending time with her family and entertaining many friends.
Winnie is survived by her children: Carol and her husband Roger Smidt of Sibley, IA; Bob and his wife Mavis of Sheldon;Jane and her husband Arlan Lode of Sheldon, Harlan of Sheldon, Larry and his wife Linda of Lincoln Ne; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren, one sister Mrs Jennie Waanders of Denver, CO; also a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters and 7 brothers.
