ELMER VAN DER ZWAAG
ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Elmer Van Der Zwaag, 76, of Orange City died Thursday, Feb. 9, 1995, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mr. Van Der Zwaag was born Jan. 28, 1919, near Orange City, the son of Ben E. and Anna (Dykstra) Van Der Zwaag. He was raised in rural Orange City. On Dec. 22, 1943, he married Sernelia Sophia ‘‘Sal’’ Borngaars at Middleburg. The couple farmed on the home farm until 1979, when they moved into Orange City.
Mr.Van Der Zwaag was a member of First Reformed Church and a former member of Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg. He was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters and their husbands, Jurleen and Harlan Koele of Miltona, Minn., Sharon and James Berkenpas of Sioux Center, Fran and Leon Mouw of Boyden, and JoLynn and Don Van Steenwyk of Iowa Falls; ten grandchildren, Cristi Koele and her husband, Craig Bauerly, Chad Koele, Tern Berkenpas and her husband, Brad Kingsbury, Curt Berkenpas and his wife, Mary, Tricia Berkenpas and her husband, Mark Vermeer, Amy and her husband, Matt Stark; Tami and her husband, Dave Lund; Gina Mouw, Shahna Van Steenwyk and
Tara Van Steenwyk; seven great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Caitlin Bauerly, Kassandra and Savana Kingsbury, Benjamin and Brett Stark and Brandon Lund; and a sister, Ann Muilenburg of Orange City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson; three brothers, Frank, Jurry and an infant brother; and three sisters, Susan, Ellen Keizer and an infant sister.
