WILLIAM VLIETSTRA SR.
ORANGE CITY, Iowa — William Henry Vlietsira Sr., 85, of Orange City died Monday, Jan. 3 2000, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, IA.
Memorial services will be at 1 a m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. David Sterk officiating. Burial will be prior to the service a West Lawn Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 10 am. Thursday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 3 pm. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m, at the funeral home.
Mr. Vlietstra was born Jan. 5. 1915, in rural Ireton, Iowa, the son of Henry John and Catherine (Bode) Vlietstra. He was raised in Ireton, where he painted with his father. He married Grace Evelyn Den Hartog on Nov. 14, 1935, in Ireton. The couple farmed in Lebanon and Inwood,
Iowa, until 1944, when they moved to a farm near Orange City. She died May 29, 1978, in Orange City. He married Johanna H. (DeJager) Weyers on Jan. 27, 1979, in Maurice, Iowa. In September 1979, they moved into Orange City. They entered Hillcrest Health Care Center in December 1999. He was a member of First Reformed Church. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards at the Adult Activity Center in Orange City.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, William Jr. and Judy and Kenneth and Maryanne, all of Orange City; four daughters and their husbands, Wilma and John Van Der Linden of Kenneth, Minn., Genevieve and Gerald Hiserote of Sioux City, Charlotte and Roger Vander Schaaf of Lake Wilson, Minn., and Shirley and Robert Gochee of Illinois City, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his wife; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Joan and James Denver of Gravette, Ark., and Ruth and Gerald Connor of Farmingdale, N.J.; six stepsons and their wives, Howard and Fran Zeutenhorst of Hawarden, Lee and Cynthia Marven of Las Vegas, Randy and Karen Zeutenhorst of Winterset, Iowa, Russ and Eileen Zeutenhorst of Farmingdale, Stan and Becky Zeutcnhorst of Toledo, Iowa, and Bob and Beth Zeutenhorst of Maurice; a stepdaughter-in-law, Karla Zeutenhorst of Atlanta, Ga.; 23 stepgrandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren a sister and her husband, Catherine and Frank Vande Werfhorst of Oak Harbor, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Marie Vreugdenhil of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Henry; a stepson, Larry Zeutenhorst; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Wilma Maylor and Frieda in infancy; a brother, Peter; and a brother-in-law, Paul Maylor.
