CAROLINE J. SMITS
MAURICE, Iowa - Caroline J. Smits, 87, of Maurice, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be 10 am. Monday at First Reformed Church in Maurice, with the Rev. Wayne Sneller officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 4 pm., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Caroline Johanna was born June 23, 1916, in Maurice, the daughter of John A. and Gertie (Kuiken)Brink. She was raised in Maurice, where she graduated from high school.
On Dec. 14, 1938, she married William John "Smokey" Smits in Maurice. They farmed in Maurice where she was a homemaker. "Smokey" passed away Sept. 12, 1985, in Sioux City. In 1994 she moved to Orange City. In 1995 she became a resident of the Long Term Care Facility.
She was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church and Reformed Church Women. In earlier years, she was a church organist. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and baking.
Survivors include six children and their spouses, Darlene and Rod Kluis of Maurice, Gerald and Malon Smits of Escondido, Calif., Karen and Terry Dykstra of Alton, Iowa, Bruce and Bonnie Smits of San Marcos, Calif., and Jim and Sharon Smits and Barb and Jim Ramsey, all of Orange City: 17 grandchildren: 20 great-grandchildren: and four sisters. Dorothy De Jong of Orange City, Esther Reppe of Eugene. Ore., Arloa Jansma of Maurice, and Audrey Siebersma of Orange City.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter. Jera Sterk: and a brother, Edwin Brink.
