Arie Francis was the son of Klaas and Neltje (Nellie Noteboom) Vander Stoep, He graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City in 1918 and then entered Central College at Pella, where he enlisted in the Student Army Training Corp during World War I. After graduating in 1922, he returned to Orange City to be a teacher at Northwestern Academy.
He married Leona C. Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado, on July 1, 1924, at Pella. They made their home in Maurice, where he was Superintendent of the Public School. In 1928, they moved to Orange City, where he was an accountant and an assistant to the Sioux County Auditor. Later he was appointed Deputy County Auditor. In 1936, he returned to Northwestern as business manager for the Academy and Junior College. He was also responsible for the Student Aid Work Program there. In 1943, he became a representative for New York Life Insurance. In 1966, he became office manager and accountant for Holiday Lighting in Orange City, retiring at age 79.
Mrs. Vander Stoep passed away January 20, 1993, at Le Mars. In February, Mr. Vander Stoep became a resident of the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, where he passed away.

During all his residency in Orange City, Mr. Vander Stoep was devoted to community betterment. He served as adjutant for the American Legion and was chairman of the Sioux County Selective Service Commission during World War II. He served as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Lions Club and Lions Club zone chairman, three terms as chairman of the Tulip Festival Steering Committee, Tulip Festival historian, and was elected mayor during the 1950s.

Since 1928, he has been a member of the American Reformed Church, where he sang in the choir for 25 years, served as deacon and church treasurer, and later as elder and consistory clerk.

Survivors include his daughter, Corene Koole, of Sheldon; two grandsons and two great-granddaughters, Frank Warner 111, and his daughter, Bridget of Maple Plain, Minnesota; and Neal Koole, and his wife, Kay, and their daughter, Kathleen Marie, of Orange City; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Arie Koole; great-grandson, Frank Warner IV; three brothers, and six sisters.
