Died. Johnson - - At the residence of this daughter Mrs. Storts, in Calliope, on Monday May 4, 1891, from heart failure, Alexander Johnson, at the advanced age of 93 years.

He has been a sufferer from rheumatism for years and during the past 10 or 15 years he has been an almost helpless invalid. On the morning of his death he felt as well as usual, was assisted to his easy chair and ate a rather hearty breakfast. Shortly after he fell into a light sleep, as was supposed, and passed peacefully away, the members of the family not discovering his death until some little time after life was extinct. Alexander Johnson was born in Washinton county, Ohio, in 1798 (1799) In 1833 he married Miss (Sarah) Root, who died in 1858. In 1862 he agian married to Mrs. Hannah Tibbles, her maiden name being Winters. He was the father of eleven children, eight of whom survive him.
In 1869 he moved to Calliope where he has since resided. He was founder of the town and still retained large property interests at the time of his death.
He was ever ready to assist those in need and in this particular was eccentric in his ways. A poor man, who could not get a dollar from any one else, seldom left his door empty handed, while those who could have furnished him ample security were refused.
The funeral services took place Tuesday and were conducted by Rev. J. C. Gilkerson. A large concourse of relatives friends and old neighbors assembled to pay a deep tribute of respect and followed the remains to their last resting place.

(Alexander Johnson was a founding father of Calliope (Hawarden) Iowa. He and several sons were farming in the area in the 1870 Sioux County Census. According to an account of his family history on ancestry.com, which most items related next have been confirmed by census records.)

Alexander Johnson, son of Thomas Henry Johnson, was born 11 May 1799 in Washington county, Ohio, he died 4 May 1891 at Calliope, Sioux County IA. He married Sarah Almeda Root born 14 Aug 1812 in Saron, Windsor, Vermont, died 30 Aug 1852 Decauter, Washington, Ohio. They were married 8 Apr 1833 in Washington Co. Ohio.
