Melvin F. Janssen, age 71, of Rock Valley, died Thursday, May 25, 2000 at the Hegg Memorial Hospital at Rock Valley. Funeral Services was held on Saturday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church at Alvord, IA. Burial was at Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden, IA. Rev. Andreas Stein and Rev. James Demke were the officiants,. Visitation was held on Friday evening at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Melvin was born July 23, 1928, in Grant Township of Plymouth County, IA., son of Dick and Anna (Beitelspacher) Janssen. The family farmed near Ireton, IA., where Melvin attended county school and the Hawarden, IA high school. Melvin worked for various farmers in the area before he married Joyce Hass on April 19, 1949, at South Sioux City, NE. Melvin worked on the Clarence Heuer farm two years before he and Joyce began farming four miles north of Doon, IA., where Melvin also began trucking. Joyce died December 21, 1972,. Melvin was disabled due to an aneurism December 1, 1989. Mevlvin moved to the Morningside Manor at Alcester, S.D. in June of 1990 and to the Valley Manor at Rock Valley, IA in March 1994. Thru the years Melvin enjoyed horses and wagon trains.

Surviving relatives include three sons: Gary and his wife Patricia Janssen of Rock Valley, IA., Steven and his wife Reta Janssen of Doon, IA, Ronald Janssen of Knoxville, IA; three daughters: LeAnn and her husband Jay Grevengoed of Rock Valley, IA., Linda and her husband Jerry Aasen of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lori Clark of Colton, S.D.; four brothers, Walter and his wife Wanda Janssen of Mission Hills, CA, Lester Janssen of Hawarden,, IA., Harold and his wife Dixie Janssen of Ireton, IA. Kenneth and his wife Charlene Janssen of Hawarden, IA.; one sister and her husband Velma and Robert Moller of Hawarden, IA; twelve grandchildren, and four great-granddaughters. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; grandson Kory Grevengood; parents, Dick, and Anna.
