Michael Baatz

Rock Valley: Funeral services were held Wednesday morning for Michael Baatz in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Father David McGoey officiating.

Michael Baatz was born June 7, 1872 in Echternach, Luxemburg, Europe. He came to the United States at the age of 19 locating at Aurora, Illinois, where he married Miss Abbie Streit in 1897. In 1908 the family came to Rock Valley where they lived in town for one year. They then moved to a farm 7 miles west and 1 mile south of Rock Valley where they lived for two years. In 1914 they moved to a farm 6 miles west and 1 mile south of Rock Valley where he resided at the time he became ill. His wife died in 1927. When he became ill last fall he was taken to the Hull hospital where he remained until four weeks ago when he was taken to a nursing home at Hawarden where he died Monday morning, June 7, his 71st birthday.

Nine children survived him: Mrs. Ed Sehr, Inwood; Joe, Matt, and Mrs. Henry Ranchau of Rock Valley, Willie of Inwood, Mrs. Bud Woods, Hawarden and Albert in service somewhere overseas; Mrs. Sayre of Minnesota and John of Alvord. Also surviving a brother Matt of Aurora, Illinois and other brothers and sisters in the Duchy of Luxemburg, from whom no word has been received since the first world war.
