From the Alton Democrat of March 1 and March 8, 1890.
Gretchen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Hoxmeier died Thursday morning of diphtheria. She was about six years of age, a bright loving little girl, and her death is a very sad blow to her grief stricken parents.
March 8 - Anthony the youngest son of Theodore Hoxmeier died last Saturday of diphtheria. This makes the second child who has died of that dread disease within a week and the entire community sympathize deeply with the grief- stricken father and mother. Both children were exceptionally bright.
(There is a family story on the Theodore Hoxmeier family in the St. Mary's Church book of Alton. No mention is made of the two children that died. The mother was Mary Krier and other siblings were Mary, Mary Claire, Mary Jeanne, Clara, Susan, Nick, Mary, Bernard and Dominic. )
