Obituary: Eugene "Swede" William Sederstrom, 84, of Hawarden, ceased his earthly journey on Monday, January 18, 2010, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden with Msgr. Richard Zenk, Father Bill McCarthy, and Msgr. Ed Burian concelebrating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Public visitation will begin at noon Friday at the Church.
Eugene "Swede" William Sederstrom’s journey began on August 5, 1925, in Volga, SD when he was born to Ivan and Hattie (Schmidt) Sederstrom as the youngest of his siblings Ione, Geneva, Luverne "Bud", Kenneth, and Maxine.
Swede spent his boyhood in Arlington, SD and completed his formal education upon eighth grade graduation. In 1941 at the age of only sixteen, he enlisted in the US Navy. After a tour of duty in Guam and while stationed in Florida, Swede met and married Billie McMullen in 1945 and returned to South Dakota after his discharge. The next year a son, Eugene, Jr., was born.
In 1959 Swede and Aida McCardle exchanged marriage vows, and along with Aida’s children, David Robert (Bob) and Marie, they made their home in Sioux Falls, where sons Charles (Chuck) and Steve were born.
On January 7, 2005, Swede and Virginia McCarthy were united in marriage in Hawarden, IA, and Swede became step-father to Virginia’s adult children Fr. William McCarthy, Mary Koehler, and Patty Hayden.
Having experienced the hardships of the Depression era, Swede knew the value of a penny and rarely let one out of his grasp without a good pinch. Swede’s innate intelligence, willingness to go the extra mile, and entrepreneurial skills enabled him to achieve success in any occupational endeavor he undertook. The consummate salesman, he sold everything from encyclopedias, insurance and water softeners to seed and grain. Swede was an excellent cook who owned and operated restaurants in South Dakota, Florida, and Iowa. He loved cooking for family and friends using his "secret" recipes which he rarely revealed to anyone. Using his exceptional ability to fix all things mechanical, Swede started Swede’s Repair in 1984 which he operated in Hawarden until recently.
Swede is survived by his wife Virginia, Hawarden, IA; sister, Ione Olson, Arlington, SD; sister-in-law, Beverly Sederstrom, Sioux Falls; children: Eugene (Victoria, BC), David Robert ‘Bob’ McCardle (St. Louis, MO), Marie McCardle (Chaska, MN), Charles ‘Chuck’ (Chaska, MN), Steve (York, PA), Fr. William McCarthy, Remsen, IA, Mary (Brad) Koehler, Minneapolis, MN, and Patty (David) Hayden, Primghar, IA. He is further survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, Ivan and Hattie and step-mother Helen, Swede was preceded in death by his siblings Geneva Phelps (Arlington), Maxine Wood (Sioux Falls), Kenneth (Sioux Falls), Luverne (Davenport, IA), former spouses Billie and Aida, and stillborn daughter Kathryn Lee.
