PETER W. LANGSTRAAT
Mr. Peter Langstraat, age 93, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, February 3, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Peter was born on December 20, 1916, at Hospers, the son of William C. and Jennie (Van Meeteren) Langstraat. He was raised at Newkirk.

On December 21, 1939, he married Elizabeth Doppenberg in Orange City. They first made their home in Newkirk, where he was a clerk at the Newkirk Store. In 1941, they moved to Orange City, where he was a partner with Gerrit and John Mulder in their corn shelling and trucking business. In 1951, he became the Standard Oil agent and bulk plant manager, and in 1961, he began his own corn shelling and trucking business. In 1970, he purchased a truck, which he drove for Farmers Feed and Supply of Boyden. In 1980, he retired to care for his ill wife, who passed away on December 28, 1982, in Sioux Center.

In 1984, "Pete" began driving part-time for Adrian Van Zandbergen Trucking, and in 1988, he started working part-time for De Vries Transfer. He completely retired in 1996. On January 21 of this year, he moved to Hillcrest.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, LeRoy and Diane Langstraat, of Ireton; and Randall and Kathy Langstraat, of Bensenville, Illinois; a daughter, Kathy Langstraat, of Boyden; four grandchildren, Jim Langstraat, and his wife, Deb, of Elk Point, South Dakota; Jeff Langstraat, and his wife, Denise, of Jefferson, South Dakota; Randy Langstraat, and his girlfriend, Amanda, of Grand Junction, Colorado; and Kristy, and her husband, Darrell Bolte, of Montgomery, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Manny Langstraat, and his wife, Alysha, of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and Abbey Langstraat, of Elk Point; a sister, Angelina Torrenga, of Clinton, Wisconsin; a brother-in-law, Eugene Vande Brake; two sisters-in-law, Ida and Joy Langstraat; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jennie Vande Brake; and six brothers, Cornie, Dick, Howard, John, Walter, and William Langstraat.
