James was the son of Nicholas and Gertrude (Jurink) Cleveringa. He was raised on the family farm northwest of Newkirk and graduated from the Newkirk Consolidated High School.
On June 6, 1947, he married Arlene Joyce Bomgaars at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg. They lived on the Cleveringa family farm at Newkirk, where he farmed and she was a homemaker. On January 6 of this year, he moved to the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
Mr. Cleveringa was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church. He also belonged to the American Trapshooting Association and Pheasants Forever.
He liked to go trapshooting, hunting, snowmobiling, camping, and traveling. Jim enjoyed accompanying his wife, when she performed with the "Melodaires", and he loved attending their grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years; two sons, Dwane Cleveringa of Alton; and Michael Cleveringa and his wife, Valerie, of Rock Rapids; a daughter and her husband, Debra and Darwin Vermaat, of Cottonwood, Minnesota; and nine grandchildren, Nicole, James, and Andrew Cleveringa; Alyssa and her husband, Jay Taber; Eric Cleveringa; and Tanner, Blake, Jameson, and Caitlin Vermaat
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Hester Peuse, Henry Cleveringa, and Berdena De Boer
