Rites Held for Pioneer Here
Nels Charbbonno Who Came To This Area From Nebraska 75 Years Ago is Victim of Cancer.
Funeral services for Ne4Hls Charbbonno, 84, a pioneer of this section, were held at the Ross Funeral home at 2:30 Monday afternoon with Rev. M.M. Schaper in charge. Interment was in Grace Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Charbbonno had been in poor health for some time, a victim of cancer. He was removed about two weeks ago to the Grossman Hospital in Orange City where he died last Friday.
Mr. Charbbonno was a pioneer of this section, coming here from Neraska with his mother 76 years ago when he was but a young boy.
He was an eye witness to the building of Hawarden from the time the town had its first store, then located in Calliope. He was one of the workmen who helped break the ground and lay the ties for the northern branch of the Milwaukee railroad.
For 20 years Mr. Charbbonno cared for his invalid wife, who preceded him in death three years ago. Before his wife became an invalid, both attended the Methodist church.
Mr. Charbbonno, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Charbbonno, was born in 1863 at Ponca, Neb. When he came to this vicinity he located in Union County, S.D. Here he farmed for a number of years, coming to Hawarden when he retired.
He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John McCormick of Hawarden and Isabelle Charbbonno of Orange City, and two grandsons, Merrill Charbbonno of Hawarden, and Paul Charbbonno of Washington. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by an only son, Guy, in February l939.
