HAWARDEN, Iowa -- E. Marie Burton, 87, of Hawarden died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

E. Marie Burton was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Rushling) Bowman. She was raised and educated in the Alton, Iowa, and Hawarden area.

She met and married Edmund Burton while he was attending college in Grinnell, Iowa. They first lived in the town of Hawarden, then moved to the family farm just east of Hawarden. She helped out on the farm and was employed at the local bank for many years. Edmund died May 1, 1998.

She enjoyed sewing and quilting and had made several quilts for friends and family. The couple had fun at Okoboji, Iowa, and camping at Cutty's. She was a member of United Methodist Church and belonged to Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Tom Burton and his wife, Lois of Sioux City; a daughter, Paula and her husband, Dennis Jamtgaard of Cohasset, Minn.; grandchildren, Jay and Kim Jamtgaard, Ben and Meg Jamtgaard, Kellie and Rob Riley, Stuart Burton and Michele Sayre, Scott Burton and Cathy Edam, Kim and Neil Schendel, Chris and Christine Peterson, Les and Robin Peterson and Nichol Burton; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a very special family friend, Connie Green of Hawarden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; several brothers and sisters; and infant two great-granddaughters.
