Little Merrill Reeves died Tuesday night, aged about two and a half years. James Reeves, the father of the dead child, is in California, and could not arrive to attend the funeral.

Further research by submitter revealed the family of Merrill:

Reeves, Merrill died 4 Nov 1889 Sherman tsp cemetery Maurice IA. (son of James)

James Reeves in 1885 census was 21, born 1863 or 1864 England lived in Sherman township, son of Elizabeth Reeves 41, born Aug 1843 and William H Reeves William 42 born England, James 21, William 19, Mary 18, Any 16, Charlotte 11, Matte 6

The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. James Reeves died last Saturday, Rev. T R. Green of Ireton conducted the funeral Sunday. The entire community sympathizes with the afflicted parents.

The family evidently moved from the area around 1900. James's father's family ended up in the state of Washington. It was not determined the maiden name of Elizabeth wife of James.
