Hope was born on January 8, 1925 to Grover and Hazel (Shoemaker) Jans and raised on a farm south of Hawarden, Iowa. She attended schools there and graduated from Hawarden High School where she was very active in several prize-winning school musical groups including the Hawarden Madrigals. Upon graduation she trained at the Normal School for teachers in Sioux Falls and many remember her from the days she taught at one-room country schools. On May 20, 1945 she married Charles Brown of Ireton, Iowa and they made their home in Hudson where Charlie operated the Andrews Elevator.. They also owned and operated a mink ranch on their property for more than a decade during the 1960s. In 1973, Hope and Charlie purchased the Pastime in Ireton, Iowa and enjoyed three years as the tavern’s owners. Hope also worked for the Hudson State Bank, Alcester’s Morningside Nursing Home, as the dietary manager for Hudson’s Colonial Manor Nursing Home, and for several years as a senior companion in Hudson and surrounding towns. She was active in the Hudson Lutheran Church as a Sunday school superintendent, teacher and choir director, and was an organizer for Hudson’s Talent Show as part of the annual Crop Show. Hope loved to play cards, fish, frequent the dog track with Charlie and travel. She was self-taught at the piano and wrote several songs that were recorded. Hope was always interested in and concerned about others, and was known for her cheerful personality and making the world’s best chocolate chip cookies
Grateful for having shared her life are her four children, Kay (Valerie) Brown of Alcester, S.D.; Steve (Renae) Brown of Hawarden, IA,; Roz Brown of Boulder, CO; and Cliff Brown of Vermillion, S.D.; her five grandchildren: Holli-Jo Brown, Andrew and Paul Brown, and Collier and Grey Grimm.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie, her grandson, Chad Brown, sister, Joyce Green and brother, Lowell Jans both of Hawarden, and her sister and best friend, Lorraine De Lorenzo of Seattle, Washington.
