Mrs. Susie Brandsma

Mrs. Susie Brandsma, a resident of Rock Valley for many years, passed away at her home on Saturday morning, Oct. 22 following a lingering illness due to heart trouble. Mrs. Brandsma was 64 years of age.

Mrs. Brandsma, nee Susie Haarsma, was born in St. Anna, Parochie, The Netherlands on Feb. 14, 1874. Her childhood was spent in the place of her birth. When eleven years of age she came to the United States with her family.

On November 28, 1891 she became the bride of Jorris (sic-George) Brandsma. She had spent most of the time since her marriage in this vicinity.

Mrs. Brandsma is survived by her children who are Jennie, Mrs. Dick Vander Woude of Sanborn, Ia., Mrs. Bert Ver Wey of Inwood, Abe Brandsma of Canton, S. D., George Brandsma of Doon, Pearl, Mrs. Milo Burlett of Cass Lake, Minn. and Dick and Dorothy of Rock Valley. One daughter, Gertrude, Mrs. Bert Rikkers, and one son, Peter, preceded her in death. Her husband passed away in August 1932. Mrs. Brandsma is also survived by two brothers, who are Peter Haarsma of Rock Rapids, Ia., and Rien Haarsma of Franklin, Mass. and three sisters, who are Mrs. Sam De Jong of Orange City, Mrs. Frank Feikema of Doon and Mrs. Peter Menage, Rock Rapids.

Funeral services were held in the First Reformed church on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 22 (error--25). Rev. Mr. H. J. Aberson was in charge. Interment was made in Valley View cemetery.

Rock Valley News Notes--Mrs. Susie Brandsma Mrs. Susie Brandsma (nee Haarsma) passed on at her home in Rock Valley after a long illness on Saturday morning. She was born February 14, 1874 and had reached the age of 64 years and eight months at the time of her passing. She was born at St. Anne, Friesland, Netherlands, where she lived until the age of 11 years, then came to this country with her parents. She was married to George Brandsma Nov. 28, 1891. Her husband died in 1932, also one daughter. Surviving are her children, Jennie, Mrs. Dick Vander Woude, Sanborn; Anna, Mrs. Bert Ver Wey, Inwood: Abe, Canton, S. D.; George, Doon; Mrs. Milo Burlett, Cass Lake, Minn.; and Dick and Dorothy at home; three sisters: Mrs. Sam De Jong, Orange City: Mrs. Frank Feikema, Doon; Mrs. Peter Menage, Rock Rapids; one brother, Peter Haarsma of Rock Rapids and a half brother, Rein Haarsma of Franklin, Mass. She also leaves 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at the First Ref. church, Rock Valley on Tuesday afternoon, with interment in Valley View cemetery.
