From The Hawarden (Iowa) Independent, May 19, 1921:

DIED OF PERITONITIS
Dennis Mieras, 11 years of Age, Passes Away in Sioux City

Dennis Mieras, the 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Mieras, residing six and one-half miles north of Hawarden on the South Dakota side of the river, died in St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City at an early hour Monday morning from peritonitis. He was operated upon for appendicitis early in March but was obliged to return to the hospital again last month for a second operation. Following the second operation peritonitis developed and in his weakened condition his system was not able to combat the disease. The remains were brought to the home Tuesday. Funeral services were held there in the English language at 10 o'clock this morning and at the Christian Reformed church at 12 o'clock today, conducted by Rev. N. Jansen. Following the services the remains were conveyed to Maurice for interment. The family formerly resided at Maurice, but moved to Harrisburg, S.D. a number of years ago, coming to this vicinity about a year ago. Besides his parents the lad is survived by three brothers and four sisters.
