WEDDED FIFTYTHREE YEARS

S. J. Menning and wife celebrated their fiftythird wedding anniversary Monday amidst a large company of relatives and friends. They are well known over this part of Sioux county. The accompanying portraits were given of them by the Volksvriend together with the following advance sketch:

"On Monday May thirteenth Mr. Seine John Menning and his wife Albertje R. Menning nee Bruins expect to celebrate the fiftythird anniversary of their marriage. Both of them were born and raised in the village of Zuidwolde province of Drenthe Netherlands and there they were united in marriage on the thirteenth day of May 1854. In April 1871 they left their home in Apeldoorn Gelderland and came to America. In August of the same year they settled upon the farm which has ever since remained their home. Their married life has been blessed with eleven children of whom five are still alive: John Seine of Edgerton Minnesota, Roeloef on the old homestead, Mrs. C. Van Rooyen of Orange City, Rev. Seine J. of Muscatine Iowa and Albert of Alton. Of the remaining children only one--Mrs. H. A. Scholten--reached maturity and she died some seven years ago. On the fifteenth of May Mr. Menning will be eighty years old and his wife will be seventyeight on the day following. It is ten years since these worthy people had their pictures taken and in order to present their likeness to our readers we have had to content ourselves with these. Still they have not changed much and both are today well and healthy. We congratulate the Menning family heartily. These worthy people belong to our first colonists and oldest inhabitants and are worthy of the respect and honor of all who know them. [There follows some general good wishes.]

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Seine J. Menning, born 16 May 1827, died 6 July 1913; Albertje Menning, born 17 May 1829, died 4 Oct 1917; both buried in Newkirk Cemetery.
