CELEBRATE THEIR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY

Today at Orange City Mr. and Mrs. Peter Muilenburg celebrate their golden wedding. For fifty years they have trod the path of life side by side and met its sorrows and its joys together. Peter Muilenburg was born in Vurem province of Gelderland in the Netherlands seventy-one years ago. A year later--in Dortrecht--Klazine Vischer was born. They came to Pella Iowa with their parents--she in 1847 and he in 1848. There November seventeenth 1856 they joined hearts and hands for the journey through life. Of the twelve children born to them ten are living. Six of them were born in Pella. They are Teuntje now Mrs. F. Van Zuiden of Sioux City, Alexander of Leota Minnesota, Elizabeth now Mrs. Jerome Fisher of Orange City, Jennie now Mrs. E. H. Casjens of Orange City, Anna now Mrs. D. Johnson of Carnes, John of Hull.

In the summer of 1871 the family emigrated to Sioux county with those other hardy pioneers to whom the county today owes so much of its fame. They homesteaded the northwest quarter of section twenty in Holland township. Here were born to them four more of the children who live today to help celebrate this joyous anniversary. The four children are Marie now Mrs. C. Van Steenwyk of Edgerton Minnesota, Hubert who lives on the old homestead, Minnie now Mrs. Allen Van Wechtel of Sioux Center, Nellie now Mrs. Gerrit Vander Aarde of Ossian Iowa. The family lived on the homestead until 1896 when the parents came to town to take a deserved rest and spend their last years nearer the church of their faith--the First Reformed--of which both are consecrated adherents.

Of this esteemed couple it may be said as in the days of the patriarchs--they are full of years and of honor. Children and grandchildren and greatgrandchildren have sprung up as olive plants about their table. It is given to few people to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary amidst a family so large and so respected and prosperous. The family numbers sixtyeight. There are the honored parents, the ten children, fifty three grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. The children are named above. Of the grandchildren Mrs. Zuiden has six--three of whom are married and account for two of the greatgrandchildren. Alexander has six and Mrs. Fisher six. Mrs. Fisher's daughter--Mrs. John Oggel--is the mother of the third grandchild. The other grandchildren are as follows: Mrs. Gasjens four, Mrs. Johnson eight, John six, Mrs. Van Steenwyk nine, Hubert five, Mrs. Van Wechtel two, Mrs. Vander Aarde one.

In this connection it is interesting to go back still further and state that the descendants of Peter Muilenburg's parents number 304. Many of them are well known to people of Sioux county so we give a brief record of them here: Mrs. Wilhelmina Pas six children and twentyfour grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Hubert Muilenburg eight children and sixtyfour grandchildren and twenty greatgrandchildren. William Muilenburg three children and fourteen grandchildren. Mrs. A. Jongewaard seven children and fortyseven grandchildren. Antonie Muilenburg eleven children and eight grandchildren. Mrs. H. Spaan eight children and seventeen grandchildren. Peter Muilenburg ten children and fiftythree grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. The descendants of such worthy people as these are a power for good in the world and their influence will be felt down through many generations. Upon such sturdy stock the greatness of our nation rests. Peter Muilenburg and his estimable wife may enjoy their last years. Justly may they be proud. May their life together yet be long.
