Pietenpol, Lambertus 1838-1928 and Wives’ families.

This is a biographical sketch of the Sioux County pioneer family of Lambertus Pietenpol was composed from various sources by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

Lambertus Pietenpol was among the group of the very first pioneers who settled on the site later known as Sioux Center. This biography it was put together from various records. Among sources used: ancestry.com birth, marriage and deaths, from Netherlands archival records on line at www.wiewaswie.nl . Also books relating the oxen prairie schooner train’s trek to the location of Sioux Center which were; The Story of Sioux County by Charles Dyke, Sioux Center’s 75 years 1891-1966; Pocket of Civility; A People With Convictions 1891-1991 Centennial Book; and Sioux Center News Golden Jubilee Edition 1891-1941.

Birth Record – Lambertus Pietenpol was born 7 Oct 1838 at Haart, Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands. His parents were Derk Willem Pietenpol, a farmer 26 years of age, and Fredrika Hengeveld 24 years of age. He was married #1.Hanna Aalbers 1819-1889 and in 1889 married #2. Mrs. Attje Zakema DeVries 1849-1918.

1st Marriage Record – Lambertus Pietenpol age 25 born at Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands married Johanna ‘Hanna’ Christina Aalbers, a widowed farmer’s wife, born at Aalten, in1819 age 44. His parents were Derk Willem Pietenpol and Fredrika Hengeveld. Her parents were Fredrik Aalbers, a farmer, and Janna Gezeina Aamink, a farmer’s wife. Lambertus and Hanna married 11 Dec 1863 at Aalten. No children were recorded born to Lambertus and Hanna.

According to a report on ancestry.com public member trees, Hanna was the widow of Garrit Jan Meijnen 1822-1863 they had no children, she married Lambertus Pietenpol in 1863. Hanna died 26 Jan 1889 at Orange City IA, see her brief obituary at the end of this narrative.

2nd Marriage Record – Lambertus Pietenpol married Attje Arta nee’ Zakema born 24 Jun 1849 Tzum Friesland, Netherlands. They married 8 Jun 1889 Orange City IA, she died 10 Jun 1918 Orange City IA. Arta, Mrs. E. De Vries’s husband E. DeVries died 1888 the year of arrival in America. She was the mother of three De Vries children : Clara Mrs. Gerrit Ter Horst and Peter Edwin De Vries 1871 of Orange City, Herman Edwin De Vries of Sioux Center.

Immigration Record – L. Pietenpol, age 31, born 1838 , arrived in America, port uncertain, with family.
Recorded in Dutch Immigrants to America 1820-1880, which lists L. Pietenpol arrived 19 Jul 1869 Destination Asia (?) age 30, male, a farmer, Head of Household, residence Dutch, port of departure Liverpool, England on ship Nestorian.

It is assumed they lived for some time in Minnesota as Lambertus and wife Hanna left the Greanleafton, Fillmore County Minnesota area in Oct 1971. Some of the families that accompanied them had first settled in Michigan and Wisconson. Lambert and Hanna Pietenpol were not found in the 1870 Federal census records, possibly due to spelling differences.

1878 May 9, final certificate date at land office Sioux City, of Homestead Place, section 24 township 95 north , range 45 west.

1880 Federal Census of West Branch, Sioux, Iowa. Lambertis PertenPol (Pietenpol) was age 41 born in the Netherlands, was married to Hanna Pietenpol age 62, he was a farmer, living with them Jakoba Van Marnen 17 listed as adopted daughter.

1885 Iowa State Census. Lammert Pietenpol age 46 born in Holland, lived at West Branch Township 95 Range 45, married, wife Johanna Cristina Pietenpol age 66 born Holland. Living with them was Jakoba Pietenpol age 18 born Holland single, the adopted daughter was noted in the 1880 census.

1900 Federal Census. Lambertus Pietenpol was age 60 born Oct 1839 Holland, lived in West Branch Township Sioux County IA. Imigrated in 1868, married to Akstje ‘Attje’ De Vries Pietenpol married 1889 married 11 years. Wife Akstje Pietenpol age 50, Children Annie Pietenpol age 10 daughter, Peter De Vries 19 step son, Anna Frekema 19 servant.

CHILDREN of Lambertus Pietenpol and Attje Zakema De Vries:
1. Johanna ‘Annie’ Pietenpol born May 28, 1890 Orange City IA, died May 3, 1969 Orange City IA. She married Arie Reekers, He died Mar 1946. They had two sons John Reekers and Arthur Reekers both of Orange City. See Johanna’s obituary on this web page.
2. Willie Pietenpol born Mar 1893 died Apr 1893 as infant.
3. Ytze Pietenpol born 14 Jun 1891 died 20 Jun 1891 as infant.

OBITUARY of Lambertus Pietenpol 1838-1928
Source: Alton Democrat (6-15-1928) Born: October 7, 1840 (1838) Died: June 10, 1928 Lambert Pietenpol, among the first pioneers to settle in Sioux County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arie Reekers, in Orange City Sunday night, June 10th, at the age of eighty-eight years.
He drove overland from Greenleafton, Minnesota, where he had come from the Netherlands with a party of Hollanders and settled near Orange City (Sioux Center) in the year 1871. In the 57 years that have passed since that time he has passed through many hardships and seen many changes come to the virgin country which he chose as his home. His wife, Hanna (Aalbers) Pietenpol, died 41 years ago and two years later he married Mrs. Attje "Arta" Z. De Vries. One child was born to the union. Mrs. Arie Reekers, who has devotedly cared for her father in his declining years. He is also survived by three step-children, Mrs. Gerrit Ter Horst and P.E. De Vries of Orange City, H.E. De Vries of Sioux Center.
Mr. Pietnpol passed away on the tenth anniversary of his wife’s death, and almost at the exact hour in which she breathed her last.Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Arie Reekers home and at the First Reformed Church.

OBITUARY of Attje Zakema De Vries (Mrs. Lambertus Pietenpol) 1849-1918
Mrs. L. Pietenpol passed away Monday night, June 10, at the home of her children, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Reekers, at the age of 68 years. She was born in Akrum, Netherlands, where she married Mr. E. De Vries. This marriage was blessed with four children, of whom three are living, Mrs. Garrit Ter Horst of Orange City, P. E. De Vries of Sioux Center. H. E. De Vries of Hull. In 1888 the family came to the United States and the same year Mr. De Vries died. The next year the widow married Mr. Pietenpol. Three children were born to them of whom one is living yet Mrs. A. J. Reekers of Orange City. The family lived for many years on a farm northwest of Orange City. The deceased suffered for a long time of cancer. Last year, May, she underwent as operation at Rochester, Minn., and in November she was again operated on at Le Mars. During the last month a trained nurse took care of the sick lady till the time of her death. The funeral took place on Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. Engelsman officiating. OBITUARY of the first wife of Lambertus Pietenpol - Hanna Christina Aalbers Meijnes Pietenpol.
Sioux County Herald of Jan 31, 1889. Mrs. Pietenpol an old lady 70 years of age, of West Branch township, died last week. The funeral service was held last Saturday afternoon at the First Reformed Church.
