Death of George Holden Died at his residence in Ireton, Monday night, June 7, 1886 of Typhoid fever, after a couple of week’s illness.
He was born at Marietta OH on May 6, 1858 and graduated at the Marietta college the year he was 21 years of age. He came to Calliope about seven years ago and was agent for the Milwaukee railroad company at this place for nearly two years. When the Northwestern road was built he received the Ireton station which position he still held at the time of this death.
He was married to Miss Emma Tibbels Dec 3, 1884 who , with her baby boy now mourn his death. His friends were many indeed. In fact an acquaintance with Geo. Holden was sure to win your respect and friendship towards him. His record with the company was the best of any agent between Hawarden and Chicago and the company showed that they appreciated his services by running a free special train from Ireton and return to convey the remains and the many friends who desired to attend the funeral here. By far the largest funeral procession that was ever has here, followed the remains to their last resting place in the cemetery east of town.
Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church, though it was inadequate to hold the number present. Rev. J. C. Gilkerson preached a very appropriate and affecting sermon, The bereaved ones have the sincerest sympathy of a large circle of friends in their sad hour of trial.

From the Alton Review-Democrat of June 12, 1886 –
HOLDEN. - At his home in Ireton, Monday, Jun 7, 1886, at 5 p.m., Goerge S. Holden, ages 28 years. Mr. Holden was the railroad agent at Ireton, and was an exemplary young man with high abilities and beloved by all his acquaintances. He leaves a wife, one child, and an aged mother. To see a young man of his promising abilities cut off in the midst of a 'happy life' is indeed deplorable.
