Langerack, Cornelius 1855-1903 & Eliza Smits Family

This story was taken from page 417 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Note: the surname Langerack is spelled several different ways in the sited source, Langerack, Langerak, Langerock. Longrock Etc,

Cornelius Langerack lived in Pella, Iowa, and Melvin, Iowa. He married Mary Mieras from Sioux County. To this marriage were born two sons, William and Marine Langerack.

After Mary Mieras Langerak’s death, Cornelius Langerack married Eliza Smits, who was born in Holland (Netherlands), August 5, 1865. She came to Waupun, Wisconsin, when she was one year old. She lived with Annie Rukus there for many years, then came to Orange City, Iowa, as a young girl. She made her home with her half-sister Mrs. John Kleinhesselink (Jane) until she married Cornelius Langerack. They lived on a farm near Maurice, Iowa, where Leon Kuiken lives now. To this family were born five children: a son Arendt who preceded in death as a child two years old, Anna, Mary and Cora, three daughters, and Arnold a son.

Cornelius Langerack died on the farm near Maurice, Iowa, on February 20, 1903, at the age of 47 years, one month and 26 days.

After this Eliza Langerack moved to Maurice, Iowa, and her son Arnold and daughter Cora lived with her. She lived in Maurice, until her death in the year 1960, February 9, at the age of 94 years.

Marie Langerack died May 13, 1968. William Langerack died June 28, 1969, Arnold Langerack died August 15, 1975, Mary Langerack died July 22, 1974. Anna Langerack died February 5, 1988. Cora Langerack Crowley lives in LeMars, Iowa.

Cornelius and Eliza were members of the Reformed Church of Maurice, Iowa, all their lives.

His parents were Hendirk Langerack born 1818 Ottoland, Zuid Holland, Netherlands and died Dec 1855 at Pella, Marion, Iowa. His mother was Maria Elizabeth De Raad born 1831 Leerdam Zuid Holland Netherlands died 1891 Grand View Sully South Dakota. Kees Cornelius married Mary Mieras 22 Dec 1880 Sioux County IA after she died, he married Eliza Smits 15 Jun 1886 Maurice IA.

Wife #1. Mary Mieras born 30 Mar 1863 Forestville, Fillmore, MN died 29 Dec 1885 Maurice IA. She was the daughter of Willem ‘William’ Mieras 1823-1892 and Quirina ‘Carrie’ Reijnhout 1822-1891. Cornelius and Mary were married 22 Dec 1880 at Sioux County IA. They had two children William Langerock 1881-1959 and Marine ‘Marinus’ Langerock 1884-1969

Wife #2. Lijdia Eliza Smits born 5 Aug 1865 DeHeurne, Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands and died 9 Feb 1960 Alton IA. Her father was Arend J. Smits 1820- 1906 and mother Johanna Gertrud Epping 1825-1886. Cornelius and Eliza were married 15 Jun 1886 at Maurice IA.

1. William Langerak born 27 Oct 1881 Maurice IA, died 28 Jun 1959 Canton, Lincoln, SD He married 7 Jan 1904 to Mae Teuntje van der Wel 1883-1952. Their children were – Cornelius Raymond Langerak 1904-1972, Bert Arnold Langerak 1906-1979, Francis P. Langerak 1908-1985, Harold A. Langerak 1910-1989, Marietta C. Langerak 1912-1968, Earl Willis Langerak 1914-1985, Cornelia Eather Langerak 1918-2014, Margaret Geraldine Langerak 1920-2005, Lois Irene Langerak 1924-2005, Glen William Langerak 1927-2006.

2. Marine ‘Marinus’ Elmer Langerock was born 18 Dec 1884 Maurice Iowa died 12 May 1968 at Parker, Turner, SD. He married Adelina ‘Alice’ Noteboom 1884-1970. Their children were Cornelius Langerock 1904-1967, Adeline G. Langerock 1908-1976, Isaac Langerock 1910-1968, Marion Langerock 1913-1975, Wilbert Willis Langerock 1914-1989 and Elmer Marine ‘Bud’ Langerock 1918-1989.

1. Anna Langerak born 27 May 1887 Maurice Iowa died 5 Feb 1988 Sioux Center, IA She married William H. De Jager 1881-1935 on 7 Mar 1906 in Sioux County Iowa. Their children were – Elonor Eliza de Jager 1909-2010 and Gladys Mariette de Jager 1916-2010

2. Mary Langerak/Longerock born 4 Aug 1889 Maurice IA and died 22 July 1974 Sioux Center IA She married Frank Frans Folkert Kuiken 1888-1974 on 25 Mar 1908 at Maurice IA. Their children were -
David Kuiken 1908-1909, Margaret Eliza Kuiken Dykshoorn 1910-2001, Goldie Kuiken Colenbrander 1915-2022, David Maynard Kuiken 1919-2015, Orville Arnold Kuiken 1925-2016, Stanley Cornelius Kuiken 1925-2009, Wilson Francis Kuiken 1927-2014 and Wilma Kuiken Ruisch.

3. Arend ‘Neal’ Langerak born 2 Dec 1892 died 22 Apr1894 Maurice IA, died of lung fever as a small child.

4. Arnold Langerak born Jun 1896 Maurice died 16 Aug 1975 Maurice IA, he was not married.

5. Cora Frances Langerock born 23 Apr 1900 Maurice IA died 30 Oct 1996 Le Mars IA. She married Earle Thomas Crowley 1895-1932 on 2 Apr 1923 Le Mars IA. Their children were – Shirley Louise Crowley 1924-2011, Keith Orville Crowley 1925-2007, Wayne Earl Crowley 1927-1966, Donald Keith Crowley 1928-1928, Earle Thomas Crowley 1933-1999 and two others not named.

Note: From a family report on ancestry.com Cornelis Langerak born Dec 25, 1855 Pella IA , he married Mary Mieras and they had two children, she died and he married Lijda ‘Eliza’ Smits in 1880 and the had six children. He died Feb 23, 1903 Maurice IA. He was the son of Hendrik Langerak and Maria Elizabeth De Raad.
DeVolksvriend of Feb 26, 1903 In Dutch Attempted translation:
Maurice IA – Mr. C. Langerak has died on Friday a the age of 47 years. Ds. Ihrman was in charge of the funeral.
It appears the surname is spelled Langerak in the Netherlands.

OBITUARY OF MARY MIERAS LANGERAK 1863-1885
Mrs. C. Langerak, of Sherman township, near Maurice, died very suddenly Monday night of heart disease. She leaves a husband and two children, the youngest an infant one week old, to mourn her loss. The funeral service took place yesterday morning at the Reformed Church in Alton, presided over by the Rev. J. W. Warnshuis, pastor.

Mrs. Eliza Langerack – Funeral services will be held at 1:30 from the First Reformed church in Maurice on Friday, February 12, for Mrs. Eliza Langerack, 94, who died at her home Tuesday, February 9. Rev, Donald Blom will officiate and burial will to made in the Maurice cemetery under the direction of the Co-operative Funeral Home of Sioux Center, Mrs. Langerack was born in the Netherlands on August 5, 1965, and came to Waupon, Wisc., when one year old and to the Orange City vicinity when a young girl. She married Corneluis Langeraek in 1887 and lived on a farm near Maurice until his death on February 20, 1903, when she moved to her home in Maurice. She was an active member in church and community affairs until the past few years when she became bed-ridden. Survivors include one step-son, Marinus, of Parker, S. D., three daughters, Anna (Mrs. William De Jager) and Mary (Mrs. Frank Kuiken) of Maurice; and Cora, (Mrs. Earl Crowley) of Le Mars, one son, Arnold, who is at home, 31 grandchildren, 98 great grandchildren and 27 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, Cornelius, who died in 1903, two children, a step-son, William, of Monroe, S. D., who died June 28, 1959, and an infant son, Arend, who died April 22, 1894, two brothers and two sisters.
