Lang, George 1880-1961 & Clara Werley Family

This story was taken from pages 416-417 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

George Lang was born to Michael Lang, Sr. and his wife, Rosina, in July, 1880, at Springfield, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Lang had three other children: Charles, Mary and Louise. In 1885, the Lang family settled in Section 28 of Sherman Township, Sioux County. After settling, Michael, Jr. and Clara Caroline were born.

George Lang resided on the family farm located in Sioux County and was united in marriage to Clara Werley from Seney, Iowa, on May 10, 1916. George and his bride continued to live on this farm until their retirement in 1947, when they moved to LeMars, Iowa. Their daughter, Lois Maxine, was born December 1, 1919. She later married Edmund Plendl.

George was president of Sherman Township School Board and also was director of Sherman District #8 for a number of years. (This was when four sections made up a district with a school house located in the center of the four section area. One teacher taught all eight grades). Charles H. Tye was the superintendent. His office was located in the Sioux County Court House in Orange City, Iowa.

George was also director of the Sioux County Savings Bank in Maurice. Peter Vos was the president. This bank later consolidated with a bank in Orange City.

George operated a threshing machine and threshed grain in the neighborhood. He had the first row crop tractor in Sherman Township with which he plowed corn. (Some people said that could never be done). George was a successful farmer and enjoyed many of the newer implements that made farming more efficient. George enjoyed young people and believed they should be given a chance to prove themselves.

Mrs. Lang, Clara, was a member of the Sherman Township Farm Bureau Ladies for a number of years and also a member of the Ladies Aid of St. John’s Evangelical Church of LeMars, where the family were members. They later became members of the Calvary United Methodist Church, LeMars.

Mr. and Mrs. George Lang were an asset to Sherman Township, like many good people in the township.
