Henrich, Nicholas Sr. 1844- 1895 and Mary Leber Family.

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book 1883-1983 page 156. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes and articles have been added. The spellings of the names, dates and places have been left as found in the named sources.

Nicolas Henrich, Sr., came to America in 1865 from Alsace, Lorraine, France and settled in Burlington, Wisconsin. He married Mary Leber of Burlington, Wisconsin in May of 1878, they moved to a farm northeast of Alton with their three daughters Anna, Clara, and Caroline. Besides farming Nic and his brother Jake did carpenter work. In 1881, they built the first Prairie church. They also built many homes, business places and also erected St. Mary’s rectory. Their four sons were born after coming to Alton, Iowa. Mr. Henrich died in 1895. Mrs. Henrich farmed with her sons till 1914 when she and their daughter Clara moved into Alton. Mrs. Henrich died in 1927.

Their children are: Anna – Mrs. Wm. F. Schnee of Alton, born 1872, died 1957. Miss Clara of Alton, born 1873, died 1967. She lived in Alton with her mother and then alone until she entered Sacred Heart Hospital Geriatric Ward at LeMars. Caroline – Sister M. Cornelia O.S.F. Dubuque born 1875, died 1962 at Dubuque. She was in the Order of St. Francis for 70 years. Joe Henrich of Madison MN born 1879 died 1970 married Clara Kellen of Alton and then Elizabeth Plathe of Granville. The family farm is now owned by Victor and Helen Henrich Kellen, Mr. Henrich’s granddaughter. (end of the story in the church book)

See the BIOS of Nicholas’s brother Jacob Henrich for description of the life and times of the Henrich Bros. They were both farmers and carpenters building many of the buildings throughout the area including the Prairie Church.

Only indication of immigration was same as information on his brother Jacob Henrich, arrival year 1868 at Wisconsin. Year of immigration from various records varies from 1863-1865-1868. Due to the dates of births of his brother Jacob’s children 1868 is most logical. The year date of 1868 is from an index to Naturalization Book One, Walworth County WI Genealogical Society.

1870 census of Racine county WI, Nicholas was living with his brother’s family that of Jacob Henrich. He and Jacob were carpenters.

1880 census of Nassau Township Sioux County IA. Nicolas Henrich born about 1845 Prussia, farmer, wife Marie Henrich age 30, Annie Henrich age 7, Clara Henrich age 6, Caroline Henrich age 4, Joseph Henrich age 8 mo.

Death of Nicholas Henrich,Sr. On Wednesday morning occurred the death of Nicholas Henrich Sr. at his home, one mile north-east of Alton. Mr. Henrich was afflicted with cancer of the stomach and had been suffering for about a year from that disease. The funeral occurred Friday morning from St. Mary's Catholic church in this city and the large attendance of friends and relatives attested his popularity and the sorrow of the community at his untimely end.
Mr. Henrich was born in the province of Alsace, Germany, in 1844 and at the age of 23, removed to Wisconsin where he resided for a number of years. At Burlington Wis. he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Liber (Leber), who with seven children survive him. Seventeen years ago he removed to Sioux county and for eight years followed the trade of carpenter and builder in Alton, after which he resided upon a farm near town. Mr. Henrich was one of the well-to-do substantial German farmers of the county, an early settler, a kind father and husband and popular with everybody. His death is a blow to the entire community which loved and respected him. The afflicted relatives and friends have the sympathy of all in this hour of bereavement.
