This story was taken from page 486 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Grandfather Fred Van Schepen, Sr., who was born in Friesland, the Netherlands, immigrated with his wife Josie (Dykstra) Van Schepen, to Paterson, N.J. Mrs. Van Schepen (Josie) died in 1896, and later Grandfather married Gertrude Vander Tuig. From these two marriages there were ten children.
Grandfather Van Schepen was the first elder serving in the Christian Reformed Church in Ireton, and was a charter member there. They retired in 1922, moving to Ireton. Grandmother (Gertrude) passed away on Dec. 29, 1948.

‘Fred’ Fieke ‘Frederick’ Christian Van Schepen was born 2 Jan 1861 Sint Annaparockie, Het Bildt, Friesland, Netherlands , and died 14 Sep 1949 Ireton IA. He was the son of Christian Feikes Van Schepen 1829-1915 and Trijntje Klazes BIL 1834-1918. He married 20 Mar 1884 at Het Bildt, Friesland to Dieuwke Djocke ‘Josie’ Dykstra Dijksta.
Wife #1. ‘Josie’ Dieuwke Djocke Dykatra Dijkstra was born 5 Mar 1864 Stiens, Leeuwarderadeel, Friesland, Netherlands. Josie died 1896 New Jersey. Her parents were Feike Abrahams Dijkstra 1834-1902 and Idske Arjens Hoitsma 1838-1906
Wife #2. Gertrude Gerlofs Vander Tuig born Sep 1869 Tzummarum, Franekeradeel, Friesland, Netherlands and died 29 Dec 1948 Ireton IA. She was the daughter of Gerlof Vander Tuig 1840-1923 and Jacobje Nannes Elgersma 1842-1914. Married 29 Sep 1890 Paterson New Jersey.
Fred and Josie Dykstra Van Schepen were the parents of the following seven children.
1. Christian John Van Schepen born 5 Feb 1886 Paterson NJ died Oct 3, 1950 Hull IA Wife was Johanna Wynia 1891-1984 Children listed in his obituary were five sons and one daughter. Fred, Louis, Mrs. Cornie Suzanna Vander Weerd, Donald and Melvin, all of Hull and Clarence of Bellflower CA and 14 grandchildren.
2.Ida Van Schepen born 27 Feb 1887 Paterson NY died 15 Nov 1951 Castlewood, SD She was married 26 Feb 1909 Sioux county to Anne ‘Andrew’ De Jong born 1881 Holland died 21 Mar 1964 Children – Julie 1910-1973, Theodore 1910-1973, Renette 1912-1993, Fred 1913-1993, Peter Fred 1914-1996, Gertrude 1915-1939, Edith 1920, Catherine 1922-2002, Angela 1932-2011.
3. Frederick J. Van Schepen born 24 Aug 1888 Paterson NJ died 7 Nov 1973 Orange City, buried Ireton Wife Johanna Guysen 1891-1967 They farmed in the Ireton area. They had children -Mrs. Henry (Ethel) Schiebout of Sioux Center, Mrs. Henry (Dorothy) Goslinga of Orange City and Mrs. John (Eileen) De Vries of DeMott, Ind.; four sons, Alfred of Ireton, John of South Holland, ILL., Paul of Grand Rapids, Mich., George of Sioux City.
4. Katie Van Schepen born 26 Jun 1890 Paterson NJ died Aug 1978 Rock Valley IA. She married 15 Dec 1910 Sioux county IA to Paulus Anema born 1885-1978. They had children Gerrit of Artesia, Calif., Fred of Sibley, and Andy and Clarence, both of Ireton; two daughters, Mrs. Ben (Josie) Mulder of Pella and Mrs. Delbert (Jeanette) Schipper of Ireton; 36 grandchildren, and 69 great-grandchildren.
5. Minnie Van Schepen born 28 Apr 1892 Paterson NJ died 15 May 1961 Sheldon IA. She married Tunis Vollink 9 Mar 1913 at Ireton IA. They had children – Herman 1914-1999, Dorothy 1916-2008, Fred 1918-1987, Cynthia 1922-2003, Gilbert 1925-2013, Alma G. 1929-2007 and one other not named in ancestry report.
6. Nicholas Van Schepen born 22 Jul 1893 Paterson NJ died 6 Sep 1970 Passaic, NJ. Wife was Bertha Katje. They had children – Dorothy 1923-2003, Edith 1925-2996, Janet 1928-1996, Edward 1932-2017.
7. Abraham Van Schepen born 20 Feb 1895 Paterson NJ died 26 Sep 1895 Paterson NJ.
Fred and Gertrude Vander Tuig Van Schepen were the parents of the following five children.
8.Jennie Van Schepen born 23 Aug 1899 Paterson NJ died 11 Jun 1986 Hawarden IA Teunis Vander Kooy 1897-1989. She married 27 Feb 1923 Ireton IA. Children listed Gertrude Mrs. Irwin Mulder 1924-2015 and Henrietta Mrs. Bernard De Besten of Sioux Center.
9.Trina Van Schepen Sep 5, 1900 at Paterson, NJ. And died Jan 9, 1997 Ireton. She married Edward Van Engen Oct 29, 1922 Ireton, seven daughters, Gert and her husband John Sjaarda, and Louise Kaelke, all of Sioux Center. Geneva Hoolsema of Cutlerville. Michigan, Jean and her husband George Veltema of Jenison, Michigan, Joyce and her husband Harold Baker of Maurice, Marlene and her husband the Rev. John Natelborg of Grosse Point Park, Michigan, and Carol and her husband Jim Van Wyhe of Ireton;
10 Gerlof Van Schepen was born 25 Sep 1901 Paterson, NJ and died 27 Jan 1902 Paterson NJ
11. Tillie Van Schepen born 24 Jul 1903 and died 12 Feb 1997 Granville Michigan . She married Henry Kooiker Jr 1897-1974. Listed on Find A Grave - They had children – Clarence John Kooiker, Gertrude Ann Meyer, Henry Kooiker, Genevieve Mae Buist, Fances Gertrude Hofstra, and Joyce Elaine Oudendyk.
12. Gerrit Van Schepen born Mar 18, 1909 and died Feb 1948. He married Pearl Brandsma. No children listed in the obit.

RITES HELD FOR CHARTER MEMBER IRETON CHURCH Ireton, lA.—Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Fred Van Schepen, sr., from the Christian Reformed church with Rev. Paul Ouwinga officiating. Burial was in the local cemetery. He was the oldest charter member of the Christian Reformed church and a resident here for about 45 years. Pall bearers were his grandsons. Mr. Van Schepen died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tunis Vollink, at Sheldon last Wednesday from a heart attack.
He was born in The Netherlands Jan. 2, 1861. He was married at Patterson, N. J., Sept. 29, 1898. His wife preceded him in death, Dec. 20, 1948. They lived at Orange City in 1903, farming an acreage for two years, coming to a farm northeast of Ireton where their youngest son, Gary, was born. After living here three years they moved to a farm eight miles southwest of Ireton where they lived for 11 years and then moved into Ireton. After the death of his wife,

Mrs. F. Van of Heart Attack Mrs. Fred Van Schepen. Sr., 79, for many years a resident of Ireton, died suddenly at her home there Wednesday night as the result of a heart ailment. Funeral services were held Tues day afternoon, January 4 at 1:30 P.M. at the home and 2:00 P.M. at the Christian Reformed Church^ of which Mrs. Van Schepen was' a member. The Rev. Paul Ouwinga officiated. Pallbearers were sons and sons-in-law of the deceased. Mrs. Van Schepen had complained of not feeling well on Wednesday and after retiring for the night, was stricken with a heart attack and died at 11 o'clock.
Gertrude Vander Tuig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerloff Vander Tuig, was born in the Netherlands, September 4, 1868 In 1866 she and two sisters came to the United States and settled in Patterson, N.J. There she was united in marriage with Fred Van Schepen on Sep 29, 1898. To this union four children were born.
The Van Schepens remained in Patterson until 1903 when they moved to Orange City where they resided for three years. They then moved to a farm northeast of Ireton and remained there for 3 years. At the end of that time they moved to a farm southwest of town residing there until 1917 when they retired and moved in the present home in Ireton.
The deceased is survived by her husband, Fred Van Schepen, Sr., three daughters, Mrs. Tony Vander Kooy and Mrs. Ed Van Engen of Ireton and Mrs. Henry Kooiker | of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three step-daughters, Mrs. Paul Anema of Ireton, Mrs. Teunis Vollink of Sheldon, and Mrs. Andrew De Jong of Estelline SD; Three step sons, Fred Van Schepen Jr., of Ireton, Nick Van Schepen of Lodi NJ., and Chris Van Schepen of Hull; a brother Nick Vander Tuig of Linden WA; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Faber and Mrs. C. De Roos of Patterson NJ; 53 Grandchildren and 55 Great grandchildren. One son Gary preceded his mother in death, Feb. 15, 1948This picture is from page 486 of the Ireton Centennial book 1882-1982.
