This story was taken from page 486 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande berg
(Mrs. Harm Ten Napel’s grandparents are Wiliam and Margaret Van Der Ven.)
William Van Der Ven was born in Holland and married Margaret Van Sloten in 1881, also in Holland. He was a tailor by trade and hard times brought them to America in 1883. They settled in Grand Rapids, Mi. Eight weeks later their infant daughter died. William was apparently undecided upon settling in America because he, with his family moved back and forth to Holland three times. He finally settled in Ireton in 1910. Mr. and Mrs. Van Der Ven had 5 children. They are Henry, who ran a café in Ireton and a grocery store in McNally. Henry had only one daughter, so as a result, the family name died out in America. Henrietta (Reka) Herweyer; Mrs. Hattie Huenink; Mrs. Agnes Van Noort; and Mrs. Anna Koopmans Eltersma. They have all since deceased.
