Rogers, Burtren 1880-1959 & Christina Elisa Herron Family

This story was taken from page 451 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Family author unknown. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Data often times varies from one record to another. Written as found in the cited record.

Mr. and Mrs. Rogers have the distinction of being the first couple to be married in the “New Presbyerian Church” on Fifth Street. The Rev. Lynn officiated there on Oct. 8, 1902. Garfield Montgomery and Josephine McKelvie were their attendants.

“Bert” was born in Black Hawk Co. to George and Isabella (Lesher) Rogers on Dec. 3, 1880, and came to Ireton at the age of three. He worked at one time for the local telephone company, farmed for several years, ran a gas tank, and for many years was a carpenter. He sang bass in the local Presbyterian male quartet and choir, and was an active member of the Ireton IOOF Lodge. He died in Nov. of 1959.

Christina Elisa Herron Rogers was born in Wisconsin (either Soldiers Grove or Richland Center) on Sept. 19, 1879. Her father, a veteran of the Civil War, came home after his service to his country to the family farm near Soldiers Grove, to find his wife critically sick and children in need. She died a short time later, and less than a year later he passed away, leaving six homeless children. As was the custom of that day, the children were reared in different homes in distant parts of the U.S. Christina was brought to Iowa by the late Mr. and Mrs. M.V. Billings, and for a time lived in LeMars, Ia. Later the family moved to Ireton as well as many other states.

They were the parents of two children, Tirzah (Mrs. Arthur De Raad) and Gordon, both deceased.
