This story was taken from page 446 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author unknown. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

John Henry Peters was born in Mount Olive, Il., Macoupin Co., Aug. 3, 1873, confirmed Apr. 3, 1887, married Feb. 14, 1900, and died Mar. 11, 1958 at the age of 84. He married Henrietta Margaretta Eilts who was born Jan. 4, 1879, died Jan. 22, 1963.

To this union was born 8 boys and 2 girls as follows: Oscar Henry Peters deceased, Robert Louis Peters; Edward Hillert Peters, deceased; Walter Hugo Peters, deceased; Russel Eilt George Peters; Victor Wilhelm Peters, deceased; John Henry Peters; Roland Bernhardt Peters, deceased; Olga Henrietta Maria Peters Johnson. A daughter was stillborn.

John’s parents died when he was 6½ years old. Cobus Keiser, Mount Olive, Il. took him and raised him until he was 16 years old. John worked in Cobus Keiser’s mill until 1890, then worked on farms. He came to Iowa in 1897, went back to Illinois on Thanksgiving Day that year and came back to Iowa with his younger brother Louis Feb. 22, 1898. He worked for Henry Pereboom until he married.

They farmed in Iowa a few years, moved to N.D., farmed there a few years, and moved back to Iowa where they farmed a number of years on several different farms (most of these years on the John Vlotho Sr.) farm east of Ireton). They did leave the farm twice at which times they operated a dray line in Craig, Ia., going back to the farm again after each time.

John Henry Peters St. was born 3 Aug 1873 Mt Olive Macoupin, IL and died 11 Mar 1958 Ireton, IA he was the son of Heinrich Gottlieb Wilhelm Peters 1835-1880 and Catherine Marie Remmert 1838-1979. He married Margaretha Henrietta Eilts 14 Feb 1900 Reading Township Sioux County IA .

Margaretha Henrietta Eilts was born 4 Jan 1879 Ireton IA and died 3 Jan 1963 Ireton IA. 1925 Iowa census states father as Eilt H. Eilts. Her marriage on 14 Feb 1900 Sioux County IA to Johann Heinrich Peters. She was the daughter of Eith Hillers Eilts 1849-1930 LeMars IA and Trinkle Maria Bohlken 1851-1921.

1910 census of Reading Township Sioux county lists John H. Peters born 1874 Ilinnois, his wife was Margaret Peters age 31 born 1879 Iowa, Children Oscar 9, Robert 8,Eddie 5, Walter 3, Russell 1, and Victor 0.

1. Oscar Henry Peters born 12 Nov 1900 Grant Twp Plymouth Co. IA died 18 Aug 1965. He married Margaret Pauline B. Borchers 1904-1996 Two children named as Lois Peters 1930-2011 and Joyce H. Peters 1931-2001.

2. Robert J. L. Peters born 9 Apr 1902 Litchville ND died 19 Nov 1984 Cherokee IA

3. Edward Henry Peters born 24 Nov 1904 -died 20 Nov 1970 Webster SD Wife Borghild Chilson Children Edward and John Peters.

4. Walter Hugo Peters born 14 Oct 1906 Litchville ND died 2 Dec 1975 Ireton IA he married Mildred Johnson Sep 1, 1936 . No children listed in his obituary in the Sioux Center News of Dec 10, 1975.

5. Russell Eilt George Peters born 27 Jun 1908 Ireton IA died 2 Jan1992 Sioux Falls SD Wife Vivian Satterlee, one child was Jolene Donelan.

6. Victor Wilhelm Peters born 17 Dec 1909 Ireton IA died 6 Jun 1959 Ireton IA not married

7 John Henry Peters Jr. born 7 Apr 1911 Ireton IA died 27 Mar 1991 Sioux Falls SD Wife Ann Bakke children Marvin Hardy, Clayton Bakke, Joan Leitheiser.

8. Roland Bernhard Peters born 8 Jan 1913 Ireton IA died 23 Sep 1961 Sioux Falls SD He married Evelyn Schwenk, Children son Donald of Tacoma WA and daugther Rolene.

9. Olga Maria Henrietta Peters Mrs. Alvin Johnson born 23 Dec 1913 Ireton IA died 25 Feb 2006 Le Mars IA She married Mar 12, 1949. Daughter was Kathleen and Paul coffin of Sioux City.

OBITUARY OF JOHN HENRY PETERS (obit incomplete)

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for John H. Peters, 84, former Ireton resident and early day farmer and stockman in this vicinity.
His death occurred at the Sacred Heart Hospital at LeMars, Tuesday, March 11. Burial was in the St. John’s Cemetery three miles east of Ireton.
John Henry Peters was born at Mt. Olive, Illinois, August 3, 1873. He was reared in that community and came to Sioux County when a young man. On February 14 he was married to Margareta Eilts and the couple farmed south of Ireton for a number of years.
Survivors include his widow and nine children who are Oscar of LeMars, Victor, Robert and Walter of Ireton, Edward, Webster, South Dakota, Russell, John and Roland of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Olga Johnson of Sioux City. There are 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, one sister, and four brothers.

Funeral Service for Mrs. John H. Peters, 84, were held January 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the Satterlee Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at the St. Paul's Lutheran church here. She died Tuesday morning at a Le Mars Nursing home. Reverend Paul Frederichs officiated and burial was at the St. John's Cemetery, three miles east of Ireton.
Margaretha Eilts was born 4 Jan 1879, at Ireton. On February 14, 1900 she was united in marriage to John H. Peters and the couple farmed for many years south of Ireton. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are six sons, Oscar of LeMars, Robert and Walter of Ireton, Edward of Webster, South Dakota, Russell and John of Sioux Falls, one daughter, Mrs. Olga Johnson of Sioux City, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Victor and Roland and an infant daughter, three brothers and four sisters.
