Peebles, Hiram 1829-1900 and Eliza Jackson Family

This biography was complied by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. There was no biography for this couple in the Ireton Centennial book 1882-1982. There was another family of Byron Peebles 1849-1948 in the book but no direct relationship found, however it is believed that they were related as Byron Peebles’ family lived in Green county WI where Hiram’s family lived a few years also. Why would two Peebles families come to Ireton if not some connection?

Hiram Peebles was born 25 Aug 1829 Martinsburg Lewis NY died 1 Oct 1900 Ireton IA. His parents were Sanford Safford Peebles 1793-1864 and Sally Sarah Bowen, he married Eliza Jackson 1853. There is some differences in the year of death. Some sources claim he died in 1910, however there were notices of probate in the time after his death in the Sioux County IA newspapers of late fall of 1900.

Eliza Jackson was born 6 Sep 1831 Connecticut and died 17 Aug 1916 Ireton IA. Parents found – 1850 census of Martinsburg Lewis NY lists Eliza Jackson age 18 born abt 1832 Connecticut, daughter of John Peebles age 58 and wife Mary Ann Peebles 40 , Living in same residence were Charles Carpenter 18 Eliza Jackson 18, Martha Price 18, and Peter Dana
Upon checking Ancestry.com public member trees for the family of John Peebles found that his first wife was Mary Bunce 1795-1829. His second wife was Mary Ann Rice 1810-1965. they were married Nov 1829. She would have been the mother of Eliza Jackson born 1831-1916.

Hiram and Eliza had five children:

1. Julia D. Peebles born 1855 Lewis NY died 25 May 1925 Oto, Woodbury IA She married Charles H. Ladenberger 1852-1881 and they had children – Florence 1877 and Agnes Ladenberger 1883. Julia then married Willard Anis Puffet born 1853 and they had children – Clifford Leborest Puffet 1888 1947, Ellas L Puffet 1892 -1940 and Lasentany Warrie Puffet 1899.

2. Jay A. Peebles born 15 Apr 1860 New York died 30 Dec 1943 Le Mars, IA . He married Mary E. Woodall 1863-1926, on 7 Mar 1887 Le Mars IA No Children listed.
Le Mars Semi Weekly Sentinel, Le Mars, Plymouth, Iowa, USA TUESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1944 Jay Peebles Passes Away Was Early Settler In The Community Jay Peebles, retired farmer well known resident of Ireton and Le Mars for many years, died at his home, Thursday night in this city. Jay Peebles was born in New York state and was 83 years and 9 month old at the time of his death. When he was a child he moved with his parents to Wisconsin where he grew to young manhood. The family came to Iowa and trekked across the state in a covered wagon and settled on a farm in Sioux county. He farmed with other members of the family and after his marriage with Mary E. Woodall he farmed on his own account near Ireton On returning from the farm he came to Le Mars to live. Mrs. Peebles died eighteen years ago. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Wiltgen Funeral Home. Rev. G. O. Thompson officiated at the services and interment was made in the city cemetery. Jay Peebles was a good citizen and neighbor and was well known and liked by associates who were friends during many years.

3. Cora E Peebles born 1865 New York died 1925.
Source: Hawarden Independent (10-22-1925) Born: September, 1864 Died: October 19, 1925. The community of Ireton was called upon to mourn the death of Miss Cora E. Peebles, which occurred at Le Mars Monday. She was taken to the Sacred Heart Hospital at that place about two weeks ago. Cora E. Peebles was born in Lewis County, New York, in the month of September, 1864, and died Monday evening, October 19, 1925, her age being approximately 61 years and one month. When she was a young girl she moved with her family to Wisconsin and when she was about 15 year old the family moved still further west and located in Iowa. The deceased spent 40 years of her life on a farm in Sioux County and the last six years she lived at Ireton. Miss Peebles was one of a family of five, three boys and two girls. One brother and one sister preceded her in death. The whereabouts of one brother is unknown while Jay Peebles of Le Mars survived. The father of this family died at the age 71 years and the mother at the age of 85 years. While Miss Peebles was not affiliated with any church, she was of recent years an adherent and supporter of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Ireton. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist Church, Reverend William P. Webb officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

4. Sanford Peebles born 1868 New York died 1954
Funeral services for Sanford Peebles, 89, who died Wed. December 9, after a long illness, were held Friday December 11, 1954. Burial was in the Ireton Cemetery.
Mr. Peebles for many years farmed southeast of Ireton. He never married.
Source: Hawarden Independent 12/23/1954 There is a discrepancy between the paper and his gravestone engraving. In the paper it states he was 89 years old......but his gravestone states his birthdate as 1873

5. Alva R. Peebles born 1870 WI died 8 Oct 1871 Infant death.

6. Clarence Peebles died in infancy. Acknowledged in his mother’s obit. Dates unknown.

1865 Hiram Peebles age 35 born abt 1830 lived at Martinsburg Lewis NY, wife Eliza Peebles age 33, Julia D. Peebles age 10, Jay D. Peebles age 6, and Cora peebles baby daughter.

1870 Hiram Peebles was 39 born abt 1830 NY, living in Greenbush, Sheboygan WI a farmer , wife Eliza, children Julia, Jay, Cora, Sanford and Infant Peebles 2 mo.

1880 Hiram Peebles born abt 1829 NY was living in Reading Sioux IA. Wife was Eliza Peebles. Hiram’s father born Mass. And mother Vermont. Hiram was 51, Eliza was 48, Jay 21, Cora 15, and Sanford 12.

1900 Hiram Peebles age 70 born abt 1829 NY lived in Reading Sioux IA , Eliza 68, Cora 34, and Sanford 32

Find A Grave lists Hiram Peebles, male born 25 Aug 1829 Martinsburg Lewis NY, died I Oct 1910 at Ireton IA, buried Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Father Sanford S. Peebles and Mother Sarah Peebles wife Eliza Peebles.

Note: From a report on ancestry.com (by Others) Hiram Peebles was born Aug 25, 1829 Martinsburg NY, he married Eliza Jackson in 1853. They had four children. He died Oct 1, 1900 in Reading tsp Sioux County IA and is buried in Ireton IA. Children were Julia Puffett, Jay A. Peebles, Cora E. Peebles and Sanford S. Peebles.

OBITUARY OF Eliza Mrs. Hiram Peebles 1831-1916
Sep 2, 1916 Maurice Times Mrs. Peebles one of the old settlers of this section died last week at her home 7 ½ miles south west. The Ireton Ledger has the following account of her life. Eliza A. Jackson was born Sept 6, 1831, in Connecticut. In her childhood the family moved to Martinsborgh Lewis county New York, where she grew to womanhood. March 1st 1852 she was married to Hiram Peebles of the same place, where they continued to reside until May of 1868 when they removed to Greenbush WI where they made their home for ten years. In May of 1878 they came to Sioux County Iowa and this has since been her home, and her death occurred August 17th 1916, her age being 84 years 11 months and 11 days. Mrs. Peebles was the mother of six children. Two of these Alva and Clarence died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Julia D. Puffet of Oto Iowa, Jay A. Peebles of Le Mars, Miss Sara E. and Sanford S. Peebles who have remained with their mother on the home farm three miles south and three and ½ miles east of Ireton. Mrs. Peebles husband passed away October 1st 1900.
