McNally, John 1840-1915 and Caroline Mc Kinley Family

This story was taken from page 437 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

John McNally was born in London, England to John and Bridget (Mullen) McNally and came to America and settled in Ohio. John and his brother, Michael, first came to western Iowa in 1870. They decided to buy land in Washington Twp. Secs. 22, 26 and 35, then returned to Ohio after making arrangements with the railroad company in Iowa Falls. They took up farming in Iowa in 1872. John and Michael dissolved their partnership and John McNally took the land where the Town of McNally is now located in Secs. #22 and #27 and Michael kept the land in Sec. #35 and a part of #27. John McNally married Caroline McKinley and they had one son, John C. McNally. John C. was married to Belle Dale of Ireton. They were the parents of John C., Jr., James Jerome, Mary, Ruth, and Kathryn.

John C. McNally and family moved to Madison, Wi. many years ago and John. Jr. still resides in the vicinity of Fort Atkinson, Wi.

The farm formerly owned by John C. McNally is now owned by Paul G. Kading.

MCNALLY HISTORY
The Ireton Centennial book 1882-1982 has a lengthy article on the history of the town of McNally along with some old pictures of the businesses and landscapes of the town. Submitter has included a few excerpts of the article on page 44 and 45.

In all probability the town of McNally IA which is located five mile SW of Ireton, was born because of the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad. A rail line was built around 1907 or 1908, which ran from Sioux city to Hawarden, and points beyond, and as was generally the case, towns originated at points along the line. Why the town (village) was built at the site now known as McNally is not known, perhaps it was felt the location was far enough from other towns, and the people of the area would benefit from and support a town. Or perhaps it was the site of one of the sidings arranged by the railroad company at approximately 10 mile intervals to keep the main lines open.

The town of McNally was named after John McNally, who owned the ground where the town originated, and much of the land surrounding it. John and his brother Michael were two of the very first settlers to come to Washington Twp., the township in which McNally is located. They first arrived in the area in 1870 from Sabula, IA.

Some of the building first constructed in a once bustling town of McNally were the general merchandising store, the dance hall, a blacksmith shop, grain elevator, depot and a few others.

Also, the history of Washington Township home of the brothers Michael and John Mc Nally can be found on this site http://iagenweb.org/sioux/Atlas1908/P3S2/Page_19.htm

He increased his holding from time to time until he acquired 400 acres of Sioux County’s beautiful land in the home farm. He was one of the old type of rugged, honest manhood.
