McCrory, Charles Robert 1854-1919 & wives’ Families
This story was taken from page 429 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Charles Robert McCrory was born Feb. 9, 1854 at Iowa City, Ia. He was one of thirteen children born to Samuel and Elizabeth McCrory. On Mar. 21, 1878, he married Ruth Ann Stevenson, who was born in Apr. 1853, in Pittsburg, Pa., but had come to Iowa City with her family as a small child. On Dec. 4, 1884, C. R. McCrory held a farm sale at their residence in Johnson Co. in preparation for their move with their 3 children: Samuel, John, and Carrie, to their new home in Eagle Twp. Sec. #15, Sioux Co. On the old sale bill, the terms for that sale read: All sums of $10.00 and under—cash. All sums over $10.00, a credit of 12 months will be given, purchaser giving note with approved security, without interest if paid when due, otherwise 8% from date, 8% discount for cash. They had made arrangements to buy a quarter of land from George and Esther Hunter for $2,000.00. The deed was recorded Feb. 1885. Later, they purchased 80 acres across the road from C. Hilton. Charles “Bert” and Ruth were born here. Ruth Ann, the mother, died in 1901.
The children left the community to pursue their life’s work. Sam became a Civil Engineer with the Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. John became a rancher and Real Estate dealer in the West. Carrie was a missionary in Japan. Bert graduated from Ireton High School and went on to receive a Doctor of Medicine degree as well as serving in the medical corp during WWI. Ruth (Ewing) graduated from Ireton and the Univ. of Iowa, and taught school before moving to Calif. All are deceased.
On June 29, 1904 C.R. McCrory married Marie Larsen. Laurine Marie Larsen was born Mar. 28, 1875 in Denmark. She, in company with her brother, Charlie, came to the U.S. in the spring of 1891. Marie worked for the C.F. Bailey family while learning English and attended a country school the first winter. In the fall of 1892, she entered the Ireton school and attended it for 2 years, when she was able to pass the teacher’s examination. She received her certificate and started her teaching career, attending school during the summers. In 1897, she visited her family in Denmark, but returned in 1898 to care for her ill sister at Beresford, S.D. Kristine passed away in 1899 so Marie returned to Sioux Co. and returned to teaching. She made another trip to Denmark in 1903, returning in the spring of 1904, in time to teach the Spring Term. She and C.R. Mc Crory were married in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Karr. They had four children: Clara, Glenn, Blanche, and Jeannette.
In Jan. 1917, the Mc Crorys held a farm sale and moved to a new, modern home in Ireton. The furniture was moved by horse and wagon, and a friend took the family to town in a surrey with the fringe on top. That spring a garage was built for their first car, an Oldsmobile with jump seats and side curtains. Two years later in Apr. 1919 this family circle was broken when C.R. died unexpectedly. He had attended a Masonic meeting, and it is thought he hurried home so that might retire before the electricity was shut off at midnight. He reached home but suffered a stroke. Marie was left with 4 children to raise. The car was sold and she did a variety of things to support and educate her family. They were members of the Methodist Church and graduated from the Ireton school. Clara married Elmer Atwood and helped him his hardware store in Ireton and Rock Rapids. They later moved to LeMars. Glennn married Bernice Wills. He was a surveyor for the Iowa Hwy. Comm. In 1936, they moved to the Mc Crory farm which had been rented to Sip Andriesen for 19 years. Glenn was killed in a farm accident in Nov. 1962, so the farm was sold. It had been in the family for 78 years. Blanche received a B.S. degree in nursing from the Univ. of Iowa. She entered the Navy in Feb. 1943 and resigned in Apr. 1950. Her tour of duty had taken her from the East coast to the West coast and on to Tulagi and Guadalcanal. She married S.P. Marshall and they live in Calif. Jeannette received a Primary Teaching Diploma from Iowa State Teachers College, graduating in the depression years. With few jobs available, her first teaching position was in a rural school for $40.00 a month. She married Richard Hammans, who had been a teacher and coach in Ireton. They presently live in Fort Dodge, Ia. Marie passed away Jan. 6, 1971 at the age of 95. She had made her home with the Atwoods and Hammans for several years.

The people of Ireton were greatly shocked last week to learn of the sudden death of Dr. C. R. McCrory which occurred last Friday in Chicago while he was undergoing a surgical operation. No word that he contemplated undergoing an operation had reached Ireton and the news of his sudden death thus came as all the more of a shock. The remains were brought to Ireton, Monday by his brother, Samuel H. McCrory of Washington, D. C. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the M. E. Church, conducted by Reverend J. A. Kettle, and interment was made in the Ireton Cemetery. The services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic Lodge, while members of the American Legion acted as an escort. C. R McCRORY DIES VERY SUDDENLY AT IRETON
Had Resided In Sioux County for 33 Years and Was Highly Regarded by Everyone
Some time between midnight Thursday and one o'clock Friday the death angel hovered over Ireton and laid his cold hand on one of her most prominent and highly respected citizens. From what is known it seems that this grim messenger gave the one called no time to prepare himself, not even to say farewell to his loved ones.
Thursday evening C. R. McCrory went down town to attend the Masonic lodge meeting of which he was a sincere member. At the same time his wife attended prayer meeting in the M. E. church. After prayer meeting an official meeting was held for which she as president of the Ladies Aid, remained. It was about 11 o'clock when they reached home. At this time Mr. McCrory had not yet arrived. She retired and fell asleep, and on awaking early Friday morning, about 5:30 she noticed that Mr. McCrory’s bed had not been slept in. She at once called her little son Glenn to go down stairs and see if papa was sleeping on the lounge. It was for this little son to find the father dead on the floor. He reported to his mother that father was not breathing and so the terrible shock was upon them. It appears that he left the lodge hall near midnight, walking with Chas. Hughes the two blocks to the latter's residence, then going alone the four blocks to his own home. He must have gone in and prepared to retire, as his coat and vest were laid off and his collar partly unbuttoned. What the shock meant to his immediate loved ones need not be told for it certainly was a blow to his friends and neighbors and the whole town and community suffered. He was known as a kind and good husband and father, adoring his family, a friend to those in trouble and many can tell of his kindly acts and help in need, a friend tried and true, a citizen true blue in every respect, and wherever he was known he could only be liked. He was one of the older settlers in Sioux county and saw and helped to make the prairies blossom as the rose.
Charles Robert McCrory was born at Iowa City, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1854, and died Friday, April 25, 1919, of apoplexy, having reached the age of 65years, 2 months and 14 days. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Pamelia McCrory. He was married to Ruth Ann Stevenson March 21, 1878. She passed away in August of 1901. The resided in Iowa City until the year 1886 when they moved to the farm in Eagle Township Sioux County.
To this union were born three sons and two daughters, Samuel H. of Washington, D. C.; John S. of Albuquerque, New Mex.; Chas. R. of Chicago, IL.; and Ruth E. of Washington, D. C. On June 29, 1904, Mr. McCrory married Marie Larsen and to this union were born three daughters and one son, Clara M., Glenn E., Blanche A. and Jeanette E. They moved to their present beautiful home in Ireton in June, 1917. Besides his wife and nine children there are four sisters and three brothers left to mourn his being taking away.
Funeral services were held at the home- Monday at 2:30 p. m , and from the M. E. church at 3 p. m. Rev. S. Lumley was in charge. He spoke from Psalms 39:18. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Ireton, friends coming from far and near to pay their last respects. The floral offerings were profuse and very beautiful. The large church was filled to its utmost capacity. At the grave the Masons took charge and in their beautiful way bade farewell to a beloved brother. Masons from Hawarden, Hudson and Le Mars were present, more than forty being in line.
And so another one of Ire ton's citizens has been laid to rest and his familiar face and his pleasant greetings will be missed by many. To the bereaved we can only point to One higher who can allay und heal the wounds. Mayfond memories of him who is gone strengthen and bind up. Our sincere sympathy goes out to allOBITUARY OF RUTH ANN McCRORY
