Marienau, Fred W. 1865-1943 and Johanna Haage Family.
This story was taken from page 432 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Fred came to Ireton from Franklin, Mo., in 1887, having resided in Plymouth Co. 2 years prior to this time, where he met and married Johanna Haage, a native of Germany, on May 25, 1885. He was employed by R.A. Zimmerman in his general merchandise store for 3 years until starting business for himself where he successfully conducted a general store for 48 years.
Fred was a charter member of the Ireton Fire Department serving 39 years, 31 of these as Fire Chief. He served on the Town Council for 20 years and was Mayor of Ireton for one term. Fred and Johanna were charter members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Fred was a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Fred’s hobby was gardening, which he enjoyed so much. A lovely sight to see was his large potato patch in full bloom. Johanna loved to fish. Whenever one could take her to the Six Mile Creek, she thought that was the greatest thing. She had many flowers to care for and kept the cards and tea close by for when her friends would stop in to visit.
They raised 5 children: Ben, John, Fred Jr., William “Bill” and Zana both worked for their father in the store and later “Bill” started business for himself with a drug store in Ireton and Zana helped her brother. Bill and Fred, Jr. were baseball players and Zana was a basketball player. They all loved their sports.
Fred and Johanna were married 56 years, living and enjoying their life in the Ireton Community.
Note: Fred W. Marienau was a brother of William Carl Marienau, being both sons of Heinrich Marienau and Charlotta Wiltman.
