This story was taken from page 424 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Henry W. Krieger, born Oct. 26, 1886 in Sioux City, Ia. Hattie (Knopke) Krieger, born in Germany Nov. 7, 1889.

The family arrived in Ireton in Jan. 1934 from their former home in Brewster, Mn., in answer to a call from the congregation of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, here. He served as their pastor until his death in Nov. of 1951. During his years of faithful service, he taught Christ crucified to both old and young, marrying, burying, and encouraging one and all with his own true singing voice (often accompanied by his vigorous pedaling of the old reed organ in the small church school) and his inspiring sermons. During his pastorate, the present brick church building was constructed.

The entire Krieger family entered into the affairs of the community with enthusiasm, with Rev. Krieger a familiar figure often found “visiting” in the neighborhood of the Braaks Blacksmith Shop, now Lammers Machine Shop.

After her husband’s death, Mrs. Krieger moved to Sioux City, Ia.

Their children:
Lois, a teacher in Sioux City, Ia.
Eleanor (Atkinson) of Seward, Nb.
Theodore, who died in Ireton in 1938.
Robert, an Optometrist in Manchester, Ia.
Herbert, a Lutheran Pastor in Akron, Oh.
Helen (Shuck), of Sioux City, Ia.

Hattie’s mother, Ernestine Kietzman Krieger Lipke (called “Grandma” by all) lived with the family in Ireton, where she died. She is buried in the Lutheran portion of Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
