Damon Brothers, Ammon 1837-1905 & Myron 1845-1903 Families

This biography of the Damon Brothers, early settlers of Grant Township Sioux County Iowa, was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Information was stated as directly taken from the cited records. Sometimes names, dates and places may vary.

The two Damon Brothers were initial settlers of Grant township in early 1870s, experienced the hardships of prairie pioneer life including the grasshopper scourge, and they left the area before 1900, Ammon Damon going to Oregon and Myron Damon to Minnesota. Therefore, not much information is recorded about their life in Grant Township Sioux County Iowa.

Alton Democrat of July 22, 1893 Front Page ‘More Early History’ Facts concerning the settlement of Grant Township, Ammon Damon came in the spring of 1871. Those that wintered in Grant Township in 1871 and 1872, were the following- (list of pioneers including) Ammon Damon and Myron Damon.

Sioux County Herald of Feb 28th, 1878. The January List – The following named parties have proven up on their homesteads, as we find them recorded in the book kept by Clerk Pelmulder. Included the named of Myron H. Damon and Ammon H. Damon and many others.

Sioux County Herald of Jun 26, 1890 (County history twenty years ago) The homesteaders who entered northwest Iowa in 1870, were merchants, tradesmen, soldiers, and young married people, from the most populous and intelligent sections of the East. Such men were Myron and Ammon Damon….etc.

Iowa Index of Hull Aug 11, 1893 We notice in the Sheldon Mail that our old friend Myron Damon is proud of his corn stalks and takes delight in showing them up. His latest exhibit is on the measures a fraction less that 14 feet.

Sioux County Herald of Sep 9, 1886 Boyden Budget news: Mr. Damon of Clinton county, father of A. H. Damon, is visiting his children in this vicinity.

Sioux county Herald of Sept. 13, 1899. Matlock News – We learn that Leemkuil has just sold his farm of 320 acres for $40 per acre, and Myron Damon says he was asked the other day if $51. per acre would buy his farm of 320 acres, and he declined the offer.

When Ammon H. Damon was born in April 1837, in New York, United States, his father, Edmund H. Damon, was 27 and his mother, Sarah H. Hicks, was 26. He had at least 2 sons and 2 daughters with Julia A Babcock. He lived in Grant Township, Sioux, Iowa, United States in 1880 and Salem, Marion, Oregon, United States in 1900. He died on 15 December 1905, in Marion, Oregon, United States, at the age of 68, and was buried in City View Cemetery, Salem, Marion, Oregon, United States.

RESEARCH Family of MYRON HAWLEY DAMON born 11 Feb 1845 Madison County New York died 12 May 1903 Davenport IA buried Lakewood Cemetery Minneapolis MN. Married 1867 Iowa to his wife Annette Brown born Jan 1848 Cattaraugus County NY died 17 Apr 1913 Minnesota buried Minneapolis MN. Her parents were Amos Brown 1818-1897 and Louisa Alger 1818-1901 , per Find a Grave. Ancestry.com report – lists Myron Damon born 1845 New York, parents Edmund H. Damon 1809-1891 and Sarah Hicks 1811- 1886.

In 1850 lived at Sullivan, Madison NY; 1860 lived in Sullivan, Madison, NY; 1870 lived in Iowa and 1880 lived in Grant Township Sioux county Iowa; 1900 lived in Worthington MN. M. H. Damon was 56 yrs wife Annette was 52 born NY , Children Albert 29, Mary 24, Geo. 20.

Find a Grave lists Alice Susan Damon as born 1889 died 30 Jun 1952 Polk WI - Minneapolis MN. They had children – Mary Alice Damon 1915-2002; Patricia Viola Damon 1915-2002, and Alberta Jean Damon born 1920.
2 Mary L. Damon born Sep 1876 Sioux County IA died 2 Aug 1945 La Crosse WI buried Minneapolis MN
3 George Myron Damon Rev./Dr. born 27 Dec 1879 Sioux County Iowa died 27 Aug 1977 Hennepin County MN. His wife was Priscilla Eaton Beer 1881-1942. Two children listed George Myron Damon 1912-1942 and Margaret Leah Damon 1917-2012.
