Hagge, Claus H. 1841-1913 and Margaret Grill Family
This story was taken from page 398 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Claus H. Hagge was born in Holstein, Germany Feb. 6, 1841. He came to the U.S. in 1857 at the age of 17. He married Margaret Grill who was born in 1841 at Holstein, Germany. They lived in Scott and Benton Counties in Iowa before coming to Sioux Co.
They were the parents of 8 children: Mathilda, Mrs. Anton Hillmer; Mary, Mrs. Richard Husman; Minnie, (Pereborn); Emma, Mrs. Fred Bertram; Henry; John, married Anna Coland; Sophia, Mrs. Lou Kerby; Herman, married to Mary Zimmerman.
Mrs. Hagge died when the youngest son was a year and a half old. The four older sisters made a home for the family, did the work, raised the younger ones and worked out in the summertime helping the neighbors in their community. But their father always insisted that they all be at home through the winter months.
Mr. and Mrs. Clause Hagge are both buried at St. John’s Cemetery, rural Ireton.
The cyclone that hit north of Ireton in May of 1895 leveled the Hagge home and outbuildings and injured several members of the Hagge family. Not a piece of furniture or kitchen utensil could be found. The father who was in the field saved his life by clinging to a tree.

ALTON DEMOCRAT May 5, 1895 shows a map of the path of the cyclone on it’s path from the Ireton area northeastward toward Perkins Iowa. Information in the article was duplicated in the following May 11, 1895 issue.Article of May 11, 1895 front page carried the aftermath of the tornado that ravaged the Ireton area. Shown a picture of the Hagge’s farm, Showing Cellar in Forgraound and Ruins of the House. Col. 2 – Two miles north east of Coombs farm in section 23, Center Township, the storm came down with terrific force on the home of C. H. Hagge. It blew his big residence into kindling wood, leveled his stables and not a building or stick was left standing. Mr. Hagge says it was just before 4 o’clock and he had gone to look after his hogs, a short distance from the residence. He did notice the storm until it came over a hill towards him with race horse speed. The air was filled with mud, and the roar was deafening. He started for the house but had only takes a few steps when he felt the force of the winds. Throwing himself on the ground he sized a tree trunk and held on until the storm was gone, only a few minutes. While holding on he was covered with mud an inch think, flattened and literally beat into the ground. When he could stand he saw a mass of debris where his home had formerly stood, He staggered towards the ruins, and heard the voice of his son John crying for help. He found him fast beneath the floor of what was formerly his residence, and lifted the floor to help the boy out. Two men could not lift the mass of lumber the next day, which Mr. Hagge in his desperation lifted to save his boy. Henry is badly bruised and cut about the face, but his recovery is hoped for.
Matilda Hagge was in the house when it went smash and was blown with the wreck into a grove of trees where she laid unconscious until her father found her. She is suffering from internal injuries and her death is almost certain.
Henry the older son, saw the storm about the time his father did, and rushed for the house to warn his sister, but just as he took hold of the storm door, the cyclone lifted him, tore the door loose and tossed him into a bunch of willows where he clung until the danger was past. He is badly but not dangerously hurt.
But the most cruel blow of the storm fell upon little Herman, the youngest son of this afflicted family. He was attending school half a mile east of the Hagge homestead, when the storm broke. The school house was strewn over a quarter section of land in a twinkling, and this little lad was pounded and rolled along with the heavy timbers quite a distance. When he regained consciousness, he found his leg broken, but bravely started to crawl home, dragging the useless member after him. The little fellow covered half the distance home when his father came and met him. Besides the broken leg he sustained many bruises and his little body was scratched and bruised blur and purple from head to foot. His condition is critical, but if the prayers of the people and the best medical aid will restore him, he will baffle the grim destroyer who gave him so little chance. The Hagge family are homeless. Not enough lumber remains on the farm to build a granary; clothing, furniture and movable property all gone, while every member of the family, except two, are nigh to death’s door.
The article went on to describe other devastation and loss of life in the area.
The Rock Valley Register of May 10th 1895 stated the Mr. Hagge’s daughter, Miss Tillie was up stairs in the house pulling the windows down when the fury of the storm arrived. She was found under the wreck with serious injuries and later died.(?)
Wondering if this is accurate as have not found more out about Tillie Hagge, may have been Mathilda. Also mentions that a brother and sister, Marsdens, George and Anna teaching in the Hagge school were both killed.
