Hopp, Jacob Peter 1873-1953 & Gertrude Jepma Family

This story was taken from pages 398-399 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Peter Hopp migrated to America from Holland with their parents at the age of 11, in the years of 1894 and 1895, and settled in the Sioux Center and Hull area. They met and were married at Orange City on Jan. 8, 1904.

He worked at different occupations and finally purchased a restaurant at Maurice, Ia. While they lived in Orange City, they became friends of Ike Herweynen. Jake always had a food stand on the Fair Grounds when the Fair was held at Orange City. The Herweynens had a son, Richard, who adored Jake. When it came time to go home from the fair, Rich always seemed to disappear. He would always make for Jake’s stand, hide under the canvas so he wouldn’t have to go home. Harry Dykstra, who later became Sioux County Sheriff, would say in Dutch: “Stope mi do onder” which means “Stick me under that canvas too.” In later years, Harry would “kid” Jake and say if he ever did wrong, he’d have to hide Jake as he helped him out several times. Rich will be remembered as a grocery store operator for many years in Ireton and married Mildred Black.

In 1913, they became acquainted with a Henry Hop (no kin) who lived northwest of the Ireton Corner. This Mr. Hop was trying to find a business and as Jake was seeking for a farm, they exchanged places: Henry to restaurant business and Jake to farming. He farmed on several different farms in Reading and Washington Twps.

To this union 6 children were born: Peter, who married Marie Hoekstra, had 3 children and is deceased; William married Ada Vugteveen and had 5 children, is deceased; Luella, who married Walter Otten, had 3 daughters and lives at Milaca, Mn.; Frances married Dick Dirksen, had two daughters and lives in Ireton; and Viola married Peter Santema, had two children and lives in Ireton.

The family attended the First Reformed Church, which organized a Sunday School in 1913 just 6 months before the family came. Viola is the only one of the family who remained here and attended this church all her life.

When the family lived on the farm 3˝ miles west of Ireton, they attended “Hill Top” school. While they lived on this farm the neighbor to the west, lost an infant son. They had a short service at home, then they put the small casket in the back seat of Mr. Hopp’s car, and he took it to Pleasant Hill where it was buried. Later they moved to a farm near McNally. It was 3 miles from “Hill Top” School, so Mr. Hopp talked to the school director, and he allowed the children to attend the same school. Mr. Hopp bought a horse, and the 3 younger ones rode it to school. When the weather got bad, Jake came with the bobsled. They also called on friends with the bobsled: straw covered the floor, warm bricks at their feet and heavy robes around them. Mr. Hopp always had bells on the horses and a ride on cold snowy moonlight nights is a joy and memory one can never forget.

The children helped pull weeds from the corn fields and in the fall they gathered potatoes. One time they gathered 2 wagon loads. They stored enough for their winter supply and sold the rest to Max Feldman, who owned a grocery store in Ireton. If they did their chores well, they were awarded a strawberry soda at Bill Marienau’s Drug Store on Saturdays.

In 1926 the family lived 3˝ miles southwest of Ireton. This was during the Big Flood. A neighbor lady, who lived at the Prairie Creek Highway #10 Corner, came to visit Mrs. Hopp for the day, and it rained all day. After they had afternoon lunch, Jake said he’d better take her home as the water was rising. Shortly after he crossed the bridge south of the corner, it gave way. Later he said he was thankful to God for not letting him plunge into that raging stream.

Besides farming, Jake was a co-worker with a well known horse dealer in the Hawarden and Ireton territory. Several dealers would come to their farm in covered wagons in which the family lived along with several horses running loose or tied behind the wagons for sale or trade. They usually had a family of dogs too, from which the Hopp’s usually got their pet dogs. They would stay from several days to weeks, depending on their deals, mostly sleeping and cooking out in the open.

Also, a little old Jew would come from Sioux City. He had everything imaginable in his covered wagon. He usually gave the children a lot of trinkets and Mrs. Hopp would give him old hens for dress material, etc. He sometimes slept in their hay barn.

Due to being hailed out, Mr. Hopp sold his farm equipment in 1927 and purchased the McNally Store, which he operated for 2 years before he retired to a home in Ireton in Apr. 1929.

Mrs. Hopp served As a mid-wife and nurse for several years until her death Sept. 6, 1936. She assisted Dr. Null, of Hawarden, Dr. Maris of Sioux Center, and Dr. Fred Bendixen of Ireton. Mr. Hopp died June 6, 1953 and both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

OBITUARY OF GERTRUDE HOPP
Source: Hawarden Independent (9-10-1936)
Born: December 8, 1874
Died: September 6, 1936
Again we are called on to chronicle the death of a devoted wife and mother, one who has lived in the community for many years and whose passing is felt by a host of friends and neighbors.
Sunday morning about 7:30 Mrs. Jacob P. Hopp closed her eyes in eternal sleep following a lingering illness. She submitted to an operation six weeks ago at an Orange City hospital, hoping that the ravages of the disease could be stayed. All that medical science and loving care could do was hers but she grew weaker until death came as a release.
Gertrude Jepma Hopp was born in Friesland Province, Netherlands, December 8, 1874, and so had reached the age of 61 years, 8 months and 29 days.
At the age of 10 she, with her parents, brothers and sisters, came to the United States and Sioux county has been her home all these years.
At the age of 19 she was married to Cornelius Van Nielen of Rock Valley. Her husband passed away 10 years later.
On Jan. 7, 1903, she was united in marriage with Jacob P. Hopp, who survives with the following children, Mrs. Walter Otten, Hawarden; Mrs. Lester De Zoeto, McNally; and Peter, William, Frances and Viola, all of Ireton.
She also leaves three grandchildren, Betty Lou Jean and Darlene Paye Otten and Billy Jean Hopp; three sisters, Mrs. Peter Wagenfelt, Orange City; and Mrs. Christian Van Beis, Willow River, Minn,, and Mrs. Fred Meyers, Humboldt, S. D., and one brother, Sam Ypma of Sioux City.
The deceased was known widely in Sioux county, having for many years followed the profession of nursing and later with her husband she operated a restaurant at Maurice. Some twenty years ago they moved onto a farm in Eagle township and have since that time lived near or in Ireton, where the past ten years have been spent, except one year when she lived in Rock Valley.
Early in her life she became affiliated with the First Reformed Church to which her entire life was devoted, always showing splendid loyalty and ever ready to help. She was just as loyal to her family; every need and every call was lovingly met. Yet with the family and church, the needs of her neighbors were ever gladly, attended even when her physical body was beginning to feel the pain of the disease. In her death it can be said that one is gone who has loved and served.
Funeral services were held from the home at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and from the Christian Reformed church at 1:30. The officiating pastor was Rev. C. Schipper of the First Reformed church of which the deceased was a member, and the Rev. Colenbrander of Orange City assisted. Interment was made in the family lot in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
Home is not home, for mother's not there,
Angels have taken her out of our care.
Dark is the room and empty her chair,
She's gone to that home so peaceful and fair.
Sleep mother sleep, thy toils are o'er,
Sweet be thy rest, so oft needed before,
Well have we loved you, but God loved you more,
He's called you to rest on the bright happy shore.
