Earl, Ezra Jackson 1829-1917 & Margaret Reece Family
This story was taken from page 377 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .
Ezra Jackson Earl was born in Hannibalville, Oswego Co., N.Y. about 1845 (birth date abt 1829) and moved to Minn. where he married Margaret Reece. At the time of his death in 1917, he had been a resident of the Ireton Community for 30 years having homesteaded the farm southwest of town where Warren Baker now lives. At that time there were only 2 or 3 houses between his place and LeMars. But Mr. Earl was one of those steady going, persistent fellows and stayed by the place, grasshopper scourges and all, until he had witnessed the wonderful transformation and progress of this garden spot of the West.
They had a family of 6 children: William, Gerome, Edward, Charles, Floyd and Ida (Ellis), all of whom are deceased.
“Jack” Earl was a Civil War Veteran. He is buried in the Dunkard Cemetery.
(See his obituary at the end of this narrative.)
The Earls were members of the Dunkard Baptist Church in Washington Township of Sioux County Iowa. Page 105 and 106 of the Ireton Centennial book has a picture of the church with the congregation in front which has several members of the Earl families.

The Alton Democrat of Jun 22, 1901 had a death notice (from the LeMars Globe) on a John Earl, but from all the evidence found on this death it was Ezra 'Jack' Earl who died at that time.
A death notice for Ezra Jackson Earl from the Hawarden Independent of June 20 1901 is furnished below.
E. J. Earl, one of the pioneers of Sioux county, died suddenly while sitting in a chair at the home of I. C. Munson of LeMars, last Sunday morning (Jun 16, 1901) He has been a sufferer from heart trouble for some time and this was the cause of his sudden demise. He drove to LeMars Friday in company with his daughter, Mrs. Edward Ellis, to be examined by a doctor in order to send an application to Washington for an increase of his pension, as he was a veteran of the Civil war. On Saturday he went to Sioux city and had another examination under an xrays. He was told that while his life seemed to be hanging by a mere thread he might live a number of years by taking good care of himself.
On Sunday morning he arose and ate his breakfast at the Munson home, went out and hitched up the team for Mrs. Ellis to return home with, took a stroll about the place and returned to the house. It was a damp morning and he complained of being a little chilly and pulled an arm chair up by the stove. While sitting there he expired without a struggle, and Mr. Munson who was in the room all the time did not know that his old friend had passed away until his wife entered and startled him by saying that something was wrong with Mr. Earl. Jack Earl come to Sioux county in 1870 and has been a resident on the old homestead in Washington township ever since. He was about 70 years of age and leaves a daughter and several sons to mourn his death. The remains were laid to rest Tuesday in the cemetery near the old homestead by the side of those of his wife.
