Earl, James Franklin 1832-1917 & Maria Jan Reece Family

This story was taken from page 378 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

James Franklin Earl was born in Hannibalville, Oswego Co., N.Y. in 1832. He married Maria Jane Reece of Warren, Herkimer Co., N.Y. at Fremont, Mn. in 1859. He homesteaded the Earl land in Washington Twp. They are both buried in the Dunkard Cemetery.

The Earls had 2 sons, Fredrick and Warren.

Fredrick (Fred) Earll was born on Bloomington Grove, Ks. in 1860 and died at Hawarden in 1954 at the age of 94. He married Elnora Summers and she died in 1953. They are both buried at Hawarden. Eight children were born to this couple: Evan, Clara, Elmer, Wayne, Berton, Leila, Lura and Harold. They farmed in Washington Twp.

Warren Earl was born on the farm homestead in 1879 and died in 1975 at the age of 96 years. He married Ella Mabel Summers in 1905 and she died in 1940. Warren resided on the original homestead in Washington Twp. His parents moved to Hawarden and at the father’s death in 1917, the mother moved back to the farm to make her home with her son until her death in 1918.

The Warren Earls had 3 children: Lyle, Vernon, and Gwendolyn. 1. Lyle died in infancy and was buried in Dunkard Cemetery. 2. Gwendolyn married Geo. Lang, lived at Evansville, Mn. from 1935-1952 when they moved to the Earl farm. They have 3 children: Keith (deceased), Pamela of Alcester, S.D., and Mary at home, a nurse’s aide at the Hawarden Hospital.

The Earl’s son and daughter sold the Earl Homestead to Mrs. Clarence Muth in 1976. The Langs retired and moved to Hawarden.

Brothers Frederick and Warren spelled their name different due to a disagreement between the two as to the spelling. Fredrick used 2 L’s (Earll) and Warren 1 L (Earl).

The Earl / Earll families of Washington Township Sioux County were members of the Dunkard – German Baptist Church. Page 105 – 106 of the Ireton Centennial book 1882-1982 has some history of this church and a picture of the church with the congregation in front of it including several Earl members.

James Franklin Earl 1829-1917 and Ezra Jackson Earl 1829-1901 were brothers, sons of Watson Earll 1790-1839 and wife Grace 1796-1870, both brothers finally settling in Washington Township Sioux County Iowa. They married sisters James F. married Maria Jane Reece 1841-1918 and Ezra married Margaret Louisa Reese 1841-1887. See the BIOS of Ezra Earl on this web page.

Maria Jane Reece was born 31 Oct 1841 Warren Herkimer New York and died 16 Feb 1918 Washington, Sioux Iowa. She was the daughter of Jacob Reece 1814 and Elizabeth Jitman Penn 1818-1880.

Died: November 9, 1954 Funeral services for Fred Earll, 93, who died at his home Tuesday of last week, were held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the Baptist Church with Reverend Paul Williams officiating. Mrs. Ernest Packard and J.M. Squier, with Mrs. P.W. Peters as accompanist sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “In the Garden.” Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Frazier Funeral Home. He was born December 27, 1860 in Kansas, a son of Frank and Maria Earll. He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of 11, locating southeast of Hawarden. Later his father took a timber claim 11 miles southeast of Hawarden, and his brother, Warren Earll, now lives on the farm. As a young man he taught school on Sioux County.
He married Elnore Summers August 15, 1889. She preceded him in death in 1953. They lived on a farm in Washington township until 1914 when they moved to Hawarden. For 50 years he served on the Washington township school board. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hawarden. He is survived by three sons, Elmer of Hawarden, Wayne of Canton, South Dakota, and Berton of Des Moines; two daughters, Miss Leila Earll, at home, and Mrs. Lura Grantham of Plainview, Texas; one brother, Warren Earll of Ireton; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Four children preceded him in death.

Warren H. Earl, 96, rural Ireton, died May 17 at a Hawarden nursing home.
Services were at 1:30 P.M., May 20, at the Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden. The Rev. Herbert Gould, pastor of the Hawarden United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Mr. Earl was born Feb. 16, 1879, near Ireton. He married Mable Summers, Dec. 5, 1905, at Sioux City. She died March 18, 1940. He farmed in the Ireton-Hawarden area, retiring in 1956. He had lived in the nursing home for the past month. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. George (Gwendolyn) Lang of Ireton; a son, Vernon of Inwood; two granddaughters, Mrs. Milo (Pamela) Hemmingson and Miss Mary Lang, and two great-grandchildren

James Franklin “Frank” Earll, a pioneer homesteader of Sioux County, died at his home in this city Monday at the advance aged of 84 years, 11 months and 3 days.
Funeral services were held at the old home farm in Washington township Tuesday, Reverend C.W. Heady, pastor of the Baptist Church of this city, preaching the sermon. Interment was made in the Washington township Cemetery.
The deceased was born in New York state October 21, 1832. He went to Minnesota when a young man and located near Winona. Here he met Maria Reese and they were united in marriage February 27, 1859. Two sons were born to this union, Frederick of Hawarden and Warren of Washington Township. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota, where they settled on a homestead. They were driven from the homestead in 1862 by the Indians uprising following the New Ulm massacre, and returned to Winona. In 1871 Mr. Earll came to Sioux County and filed a timber claim on one of the finest quarter sections in Washington Township. He then brought his family here and continued to make his home on this claim for nearly forty-five years. He and his good wife left the farm three years ago and moved to Hawarden.
Frank Earll, as he was general known, was respected and esteemed by all who knew him. In the early days of the county he was ever ready to lend assistance to those who were needy and many of his neighbors of those days can testify to his generosity. He was an honorable citizen, a good neighbor, an affectionate husband and an indulgent father. Besides his aged wife and two sons he leaves a number of grandchildren and a large circle of friends to mourn his death.

Mrs. J. F. Earll, one of the pioneer women of Sioux County, died last Saturday at the home of her son, Warren Earll, in Washington Township, at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 15 days. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the Washington Town ship cemetery. Rev. C. W. Heady, pastor of the Baptist church of Hawarden, preached the funeral sermon.
Maria Reese was born at Warren NY, Nov 1, 1841. She resided there during her childhood and then moved to Minnesota. She was untied in marriage to J. F. Earll at Fremont MN, Feb 27 1859. They settled on a homestead in Blue Earth County MN but were driven from there by the Indian uprising and massacre in 1862 and returned to Winona. They came to Sioux County in 1871 and located on a homestead in Washington township where thy lived for 45 years, moving to Hawarden about two years and a half ago.
Two sons were born to this union, Fred and Warren both of whom are living. She is also survived by eight grandchildren. He life companion passed away last September on Christmas day she went to the home of their son Warren to make her home. She was taken ill about a week before her death and rapidly declined and passed peacefully away last Saturday. She was loved by all who know her. The sympathy of the community is extended the sorrowing sons and relatives.
